A global outbreak of the 2019 coronavirus disease (Chinese Communist Virus, COVID-19) has led the United States Military Academy (West Point) to switch to distance learning, but 73 cadets have been accused of cheating on an online math test.
The Associated Press reported that West Point spokesman Army Lieutenant Colonel Ophardt (Christopher Ophardt) said today that the instructor found the answers to the test paper fishy, uncovered 73 cadets in May calculus test cheating, in addition to one person is a second-year students, the other are first-year students. The class, in turn, consisted of 1,200 people.
After the investigation, six people were each dismissed from the charges for lack of evidence and withdrawal, Opat said. The remaining 67, 55 of whom admitted to cheating, have registered for a six-month ethics counseling program and will be placed on probation until graduation. Three others admitted to cheating but were not eligible for the rehabilitation program.
Participants who do not admit to cheating will face an administrative hearing to determine whether they violated the honor code and could face penalties including expulsion.
This is the largest cheating scandal at West Point since 1976. That year, 153 people dropped out or were expelled for cheating on electrical engineering exams. Opat said the incident was more serious that year because the cheating was planned, collaborated and executed by senior cadets. The whole system broke down,” Opat said.
In the 1976 cheating scandal, the U.S. Secretary of the Army appointed a select committee headed by former astronaut Frank Borman to investigate the case, and more than 90 cadets accused of cheating were reinstated and allowed to graduate, Opat noted.
