Fu Gaoyi, an expert on Deng Xiaoping’s prediction of China’s rise, dies

Ezra Feivel Vogel, a professor emeritus at Harvard University’s School of Social Sciences, died yesterday (20) at Mount Auburn Hospital at the age of 90 after his condition suddenly deteriorated in the middle of surgery.

He was also the director of the Fei Zhengqing Center for East Asian Studies at Harvard University, and was a Jewish-American who was fluent in Japanese and Chinese. He also served as the director of the Fitzgerald Center for East Asian Studies at Harvard University.

In 1979, he published “Japan First”, a preview of the transformation of The Japanese economic system. In 2012, he also published “Deng Xiaoping Changing China”, which mentioned the rise of China, and in 2019, he published “China and Japan”, a book of nearly 600 pages, covering the period from the Sui and Tang dynasties to the Yamato regime in Japan, and mentioning key historical events in China and Japan since 1500.
