EU Urges China to Release Human Rights Lawyer Li Yuxun and Rights Defenders

Chinese human rights lawyer Li Yuxuan has been detained without trial for three years since his arrest by police at Shenyang Railway Station in 2017. The EU has urged China to release Li Yuxuan, as well as other rights activists and lawyers, in light of the deteriorating health of the 60-year-old.

A spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell issued a statement on October 21 calling on Beijing authorities to release human rights lawyer Li Yuxuan and several other detained human rights activists.

On October 9, 2017, human rights lawyer Li Yuxuan was taken away by police from the Shenyang Public Security Bureau’s Heping Branch at the train station while working on a case for a client in Shenyang, Liaoning Province; he was criminally detained by the Shenyang Heping District Police on October 31 on suspicion of provocation and harassment, and has been detained for three years without trial.

Li Yuxin has been active as a defense lawyer for victims of human rights violations, including human rights lawyers detained during the so-called “709 crackdown.

According to the EU, reliable sources indicate that Li Yuxun was tortured and ill-treated in detention and did not receive adequate medical assistance. During her detention, her health deteriorated significantly, and Li Yuhan, who is over 60 years old and suffers from seven diseases, is in a worrying condition.

The EU therefore calls on China to grant defendants the right to a proper defense and free choice of counsel, and the right to a fair and undelayed due process trial, in accordance with international human rights law and China’s Criminal Procedure Law.

The EU stated that it ” expects China to ensure full respect for the rule of law, to provide guarantees for the conduct of fair trials, and to fully investigate all cases of arbitrary detention, ill-treatment and torture of human rights defenders and their families. “

The European Union looks forward to seeing the immediate release of Li Yuxuan, as well as other detained and convicted human rights defenders and lawyers, including: Yu Wensheng, Huang Qi, Ge Juping, Qin Yongmin, Gao Zhisheng, Ilham Tohti, Zhaxi Wensai, Wu Gan, and Liu Feiyue.
