President-elect Joe Biden today told Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that he will work to address the root causes of poor Latin American migrants crossing the border into the United States.
Outgoing President Trump has made the strengthening of the southern border the main axis of his immigration policy, including the erratic border wall project to combat the “dangerous” and “uncontrolled” entry of migrants from Mexico and Central America into the United States.
The Biden transition team said in a statement today that Biden spoke with Robards Obrador across the ocean today to emphasize “the need to revitalize U.S.-Mexico cooperation to ensure safe and orderly migration.
Both leaders want to address the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and southern Mexico and to build a future of greater opportunity and safety for the region,” the transition team said.
The U.S.-Mexico border is a critical gateway for migrants from Mexico and Central America fleeing poverty, drug violence and other scourges.
The leftist Lopez Obrador, who has a friendly relationship with Trump, until this week congratulated Biden on his victory in the Nov. 3 U.S. election.
