WTA: 2021 season debuts in Abu Dhabi on January 5

The World Women’s Professional Tennis Association (WTA) said the 2021 WTA season will begin in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on January 5 next year.

AFP reports that the Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open will be held between January 5 and 13 next year, kicking off the WTA season next year, which is a WTA 500-rated event.

WTA President and CEO Steve Simon said yesterday that the WTA’s early season tournament “will be conducted in an environment where health and safety are paramount”.

Looking further ahead to the 2021 season, we will continue our efforts to ensure a safe and solid schedule,” Simon said in a statement.

Due to immigration restrictions, the WTA 250-rated tournaments in Auckland, New Zealand and Shenzhen, China will not be held in 2021; however, the WTA has indicated that it hopes to have these events back on the schedule in 2022.

The Australian Open qualifying tournament will be held in Dubai between January 10-13 next year.

The Australian Open in-conference players and support staff will then travel to Australia to complete a two-week mandatory quarantine for Coronavirus Illness 2019 (COVID-19) there.

The Australian Open in-conference tournament has been postponed to February 8-21 next year. The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam (Grand Slam) event of the entire season, which usually starts in January each year.

Two WTA 500-level championships will be held simultaneously at Melbourne Park, Australia, from Jan. 31 to Feb. 7, as warm-up matches for the Australian Open.
