Political figures have been murdered in Mexico from time to time, but few governors have been killed. A 46-year-old former governor of Jalisco state was escorted by a number of bodyguards to a restaurant at a local beach resort on Friday (18), but was strangely assassinated in the toilet. No organization has admitted responsibility, but police believe that the drug cartel “Jalisco New Generation” is the most suspicious; President Ovrador mourned the incident.
The incident occurred at 1:40 a.m. local time when Aristóteles Sandoval, who was having dinner with three people in Puerto Vallarta, left his bodyguards outside the door and went into the bathroom alone. He was then shot in the back by a gunman, and when the bodyguard intended to take him to the hospital, a gun battle broke out with 8 to 10 men, and the gunman eventually escaped and one bodyguard was seriously injured.
It is reported that Sandoval has as many as 15 bodyguards, about half of them were on duty with him that day, but there are also reports that he only brought two bodyguards with him. Jalisco Attorney General Solis (Gerardo Octavio Solis) said the restaurant involved in the incident interfered with the judicial investigation and removed blood stains, fingerprints and disposed of surveillance cameras after the incident. Authorities will investigate the restaurant staff and target the suspect for investigation.
Analysis says the bloodshed is meant to warn the current governor Alfaro (Enrique Alfaro) to stop the fight against drug cartels, which is likely to increase tensions in the June 6 midterm elections next year, leaving Jalisco’s political class in turmoil. As early as 2013, Sandoval just took office after a bloody incident, his new director of tourism only a week, in Guadalajara by members of the new generation of Jalisco shot dead.
