U.S. Rep. Richmond, who will soon serve as a senior White House adviser, contracted the disease, while Biden, with whom he has interacted outdoors, screened negative for 2019 coronavirus disease.
Cedric Richmond (R-Ga.) traveled alone to Georgia on the 15th to join Biden in stumping for two Democrats in the Senate runoff. The two men will be running against incumbent Republican senators in a tight race.
Biden’s transition team spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield said in a statement that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) definition, Richmond and Biden did not have close contact, and that their previous “interaction was outdoors, both wearing masks, and lasted less than 15 minutes.
She said that according to the CDC, Richmond, who will be the director of the Office of Public Engagement in the White House, had no close contact with Biden and Senate candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.
Biden’s team said Biden, 78, had a negative reaction to a 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) screening test today.
According to Bedingfield, 47-year-old Richmond, who showed symptoms of infection yesterday, had a positive fast screening result, and the follow-up test was also positive, and Richmond has begun a 14-day quarantine period.
President Donald Trump is surrounded by dozens of people infected with the disease. The new coronavirus has claimed the lives of about 310,000 people in the United States.
