SMIC blacklisted by the U.S. 11 affiliates also included in the list

The U.S. Department of Commerce (Commerce) announced on December 18 that it has blacklisted China’s largest chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMIC), from the trade blacklist.

According to a statement from the Commerce Department, SMIC was blacklisted because of “evidence of activity between SMIC and significant entities of the Chinese military industrial complex.

The Commerce Department also blacklisted 11 SMIC affiliates to prevent them from acquiring more advanced U.S. technology, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said.

In all, the U.S. will blacklist 77 corporate entities and their affiliates, almost all of which are Chinese companies. These corporate entities include companies that have committed human rights abuses in China, as well as companies that support militarization and illegal maritime claims in the South China Sea.
