New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed a bill prohibiting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from arresting illegal immigrants in New York courts.
Proposed the bill (S00425A/A2176A) members for democratic state senators horman (Brad Hoylman), prohibits ICE and other federal immigration agency in the case of no with valid documents, court Arrest in New York to attend the court procedure of immigration (as well as illegal immigrants), and ICE to make arrests, must be authorized by the judge Warrant (Arrest Warrant).
On September 25, 2019, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and several immigration groups filed two separate lawsuits against ICE in federal court for the Southern District of New York. Then, on June 10, a federal court in the Southern District of New York ruled that ICE was prohibited from making civil arrests in or near courts of anyone who was a party or witness to the court.
Although Cuomo claims he has been protecting immigrant communities, a vicious crime in January has drawn national attention to the problem of “sanctuary cities.” The perpetrator was an illegal immigrant whom ICE had issued a detention order for the City to send back. But the city ignored ICE’s request, enforced the state’s push for effective cashless bail, and released the killer, who allegedly raped an elderly woman in Richmond, Queens, in January, leaving her injured and dead a few days later.
