She added: “All aspects of our foreign policy must be guided by the values of the European Union. We must make sure that we always uphold those values. These values are not weakness, they are strength.

“I accuse.”

Raphael Glucksmann, a left-wing French writer and European member of parliament from the Public Squares party, posted a video of his speech to the European Parliament today on his Instagram feed. He mimics the sentence pattern of The Great French writer Zola’s I accuse:

“I accuse the Leaders of the Communist Party of committing the most serious crime against humanity of the 21st century by expelling and extermination of the Uighur people; I accuse the international community of being passive and silent in allowing this crime to occur; I accuse leaders of Muslim countries from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia of holding up the banner of their faith while supporting China’s policy of destroying mosques and desecrating cemeteries; I accuse Nike, Zara and the greedy bosses of many multinational corporations of profiting from the enslavement of a people; I accuse the cowardly and boneless European leaders whom we urged a year ago to take action to close these camps; But what have we done in the past year? Nothing, nothing, nothing.”
