French President Emmanuel Macron tested positive for the Chinese communist virus (COVID-19) on Thursday and will be quarantined for seven days.
A statement from the Elysee Palace said Mr. Macron, 42, had developed symptoms of what appeared to be a communist virus and had immediately undergone tests that tested positive.
The statement stressed that Mr. Macron would lead the country during the quarantine, including by video conference, though his public engagements, including a visit to Lebanon, were canceled.
Jean Castex, the French prime minister, will also go into self-quarantine.
The day before the diagnosis, On Wednesday, Mr. Macron met with The Portuguese prime minister, Antonio Costa, for lunch and a cabinet meeting. Authorities are tracking down people who may have been in contact with Macron.
France has confirmed 2 million cases and killed more than 59,400 people since the outbreak began, according to Johns Hopkins University.
