The iPhone 4, a phone that was released 10 years ago, has become the perfect Apple phone for many with its unique construction and design.

Ten years later, the iPhone 12 was released, and it’s a filthy reincarnation of the iPhone 4.

Only, with new processes and technology, the iPhone 12 has returned to our eyes in a more modern form.

Today we’re going to talk about Apple’s latest iPhone 12 and 12 Pro releases.

Without the charging head and headphones, the box gets smaller
Still right-angled bezels, plain glass, still solid packaging, er, not quite the same box.

I used to not care much for iPhone boxes, but the iPhone 12 box is hard to ignore.

After eliminating the charging head and wired headphones, the iPhone 12’s box is a full half thinner than its predecessor, and if Apple used to only be able to haul 5,000 iPhones in a truckload, now it can probably haul 10,000 phones in a truckload.

With the drop in shipping costs and the improvement in logistics efficiency, I can only say that Cook is a truly gifted businessman.

It stands to reason that the lower cost should eventually be reflected in pricing, but this year, the iPhone 12 has gone up by $800 for the standard version of the 12, even though it’s only available in the Pro line.

What’s the reason? Let’s start with the iPhone 12 itself.

The Resurrection of Right Angle Bezels
The first thing I noticed when I got my hands on the machine was that it was both familiar and a little strange.

The iPhone 12 is familiar not all because of the iPhone 4. After all, this right-angled bezel design is more reminiscent of the iPhone 5.

The difference is that the edges of the iPhone 12’s frame don’t have that chamfered cut edge, so when you hold it in your hand, it won’t be as pressed as it was back then.

But the unfamiliarity is also brought on by that same bezel. Looking back at the last four or five years of iPhones, every one of them has a rounded side curve that outlines its structural shape to fit our palms.

With this generation of the iPhone 12, you won’t be able to feel the curvature of your fingers anymore, and not only are the bezels shot flat, but even the glass on the surface of the screen has gone from the original 2.5D glass to a purely flat design.

Is this a good thing? I can’t say, it’s like when someone you see every day suddenly changes their appearance, so first instinct, it must be a bit uncomfortable.

The iPhone 12 has a similar change in feel and it’s definitely going to take some time to accept it. But I’m happy to see that the iPhone 12 is thin enough to stand up again, which rather helps us with our shots.

After talking about the 12, let’s take a look at the 12 Pro. Hey, isn’t this the same phone, and even I can’t really tell the difference without looking over it. And because of that, the cases for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are completely universal this year.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro not only have the same screen size, but also have the same bezel width and thickness.

There is also the “ultra-porcelain crystal panel” on the screen, which is claimed to quadruple the drop resistance of the iPhone 12. I still don’t know if it’s really drop resistant, but after a few days of review, we can already see a tiny scratch on the iPhone 12 screen in our hands, so it seems like the film business can still go on.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro come in several other colorways. In addition to the new blue, the 12’s green is no longer the Tiffany Blue of the 11, the white version also comes with some gold highlights, and the 12 Pro Gold will have a brighter bezel than the other three colors.

In the face of all these similarities, it’s very suspicious that the iPhone 12 Pro, and why the Pro, is a Pro, especially when we take out the iPhone 11 again, to compare it to the 12, and exclaim from the bottom of our hearts that this year’s iPhone 12 is truly worth it.

But the 12 Pro still retains some unique features. High-gloss bezels made of polished stainless steel and frosted glass that’s less prone to fingerprints are all part of the texture, but you’ll only notice the difference once you get your hands on it.

Yes, the iPhone 12 Pro does weigh a bit more than the 12.

There’s also a subtle difference in the screen. iPhone 12 Pro has a slightly higher maximum brightness than iPhone 12, but that’s an advantage that only comes through in bright outdoor light.

5G speeds are faster, and the signal is better.
After talking about looks, let’s talk about the 5G we’ve all been waiting for.

As soon as I got the phone, I plugged the 5G card into my iPhone with great anticipation. When I saw the 5G icon pop up in the signal bar, I couldn’t help but feel that the iPhone has finally made it to the end.

For 5G networks, Apple offers three options for iPhone 12: Enable 5G, Auto 5G, and 4G.

The system chooses Auto 5G mode by default, which is the “Smart Data Mode” that was mentioned at the launch. When you don’t need 5G speeds, such as background updates, iPhone 12 will automatically switch to a 4G network to conserve power. And for speed-critical scenarios like playing games and caching movies, 5G will be used first.

To test the network stability of this year’s iPhone 12, we used an iPhone 11 Pro Max plugged into a Unicom 4G card, an iPhone 12 Pro plugged into a Unicom 4G card, and an iPhone 12 plugged into a Unicom 5G card.

In doing so, we wanted to clarify three main issues.

One. Is the iPhone 12’s networking efficiency improved over previous models?
ii. 5G, what can it bring to the iPhone 12?
Three. If I only have a 4G card and haven’t activated a 5G plan yet, will using iPhone 12 make a difference?

We collected data from five different areas in Guangzhou, including outdoor, indoor, basement level, elevator and underground parking.

In terms of results, the iPhone 12 has the edge. With everyone using 4G network, the iPhone 12 can download 1-2 MB per second faster.

But this gap is not noticeable in real life, not to mention that there are some scenarios where the iPhone 11 Pro Max overtakes.

An even bigger difference is made by 5G. As long as the test scenario can search for a 5G signal, the iPhone 12 can both be 6-7x faster in rate compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

This 5G improvement also applies to users who don’t have a 5G subscription.

We have a 4G card from Unicom that is not 5G, and when we plugged it into our iPhone 12, the 5G signal bar also showed a 5G flag, and the speed was faster than when we plugged it into a 4G phone.

During our testing, we also encountered a situation where the 4G signal bar on the iPhone 11 Pro Max was full, but there was no network speed.

Only iPhone 12 kept the 5G speeds it deserved. And the SIM card it has in it is the same 5G card that has the 5G package enabled.

In the Features section, iPhone 12 also has an option for ‘Standalone 5G’. This switch is off by default, as it relates to local standalone network coverage.

We don’t recommend turning it on if you’re in a city or region that still has a mix of non-standalone and standalone coverage.

Dual SIM dual standby doesn’t work with 5G? False
A rumor surfaced online yesterday that the iPhone 12 won’t be able to use 5G networks with dual SIM.

It’s definitely a rumor, but the best way to dispel it is to test it out.

We plugged a Unicom 5G card and a carrier 5G card into our iPhone 12 and used them together. We won’t go into the testing process, but here’s the conclusion.

  1. iPhone 12 supports 5G network in dual SIM mode.

In the settings page, you can use Unicom 5G for Internet and Telecom for calls; you can also switch to Telecom 5G for Internet and Unicom for calls, the process is very simple.

  1. iPhone 12 supports 5G dual SIM/dual standby, but not dual SIM/dual standby dual communication.

From the test results, when the Unicom 5G is set as an Internet card and the Telecom 5G is set as a calling card in iPhone 12, Unicom 5G will drop to 4G when the Unicom card is connected to the phone and the Telecom card cannot receive incoming calls.

  1. When you insert two 5G cards into iPhone 12, the “Independent 5G” switch will not be enabled.

This means that the iPhone 12 will only be able to use non-standalone 5G in dual-card mode, but according to our sources, Apple will make up for the dual-card standalone 5G feature in a later software update.

To conclude, network is about the lowest level of the smartphone experience, and 5G support frees us from the signal anxiety we’ve had with our iPhones for three years.

No matter how much you like the design of the iPhone 12 or how much you’re obsessed with its price, it’s all going to fade with time, and 5G – the ultimate motivation that should determine whether or not you upgrade your iPhone 12.

The A14 chip. Still top-notch performance.
The iPhone 12 comes with 4GB of storage, the same as last year’s iPhone 11, but the iPhone 12 Pro jumps to 6GB.

The level of memory is mainly related to the multitasking experience of iPhone.

Let’s take iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, open 16 memory-hungry apps and then switch between them to multitask.

As you can see, when we switched back to WeChat, the iPhone 12 experienced a reload and the familiar WeChat Little Earth interface was back, but on the iPhone 12 Pro, you can go straight to the WeChat chat interface.

In terms of performance, the two iPhones are basically the same.

According to GeekBench 5, the A14 chip is 20% more powerful than the A13 chip in iPhone 11 Pro Max, and 15% more powerful than the A14 chip in iPhone 11 Pro Max.

For the graphics processor, we used 3D Mark’s benchmark software “3DMark Wild Life” and then output the frame rate graph.

Of course, good performance isn’t just for the score, and our original plan was to check out the iPhone 12’s performance potential further with the better graphics quality game, The Original Gods.

What we didn’t realize is that both iPhone 12s come with the latest iOS 14.1 pre-installed, a firmware that wasn’t officially released at the time of our review. This causes the iPhone 12 to experience connection errors when connecting to macOS, as well as being unable to capture test data by the software.

Pity.
