Both houses of The US Congress have passed a new defence authorization bill worth more than $740bn, awaiting the president’s signature. On Dec. 13, Trump said the biggest winner of the defense bill would be China, and he would veto it.
The U.S. Senate approved the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2021 by a vote of 84 to 13 on Dec. 11. The House earlier passed the bill by a vote of 335 to 78. The bill will then be sent to President Trump.
President Trump will have 10 days (other than working days) to issue a veto order, sign it or allow it to become law without his signature.
President Trump has previously disputed the content of the National Defense Authorization Act. One of the controversies is Section 230 of the Communications and Decency Act, which provides a protective umbrella for social media.
The provision gives social media companies immunity from prosecution for content that appears on their platforms, or for removing parts of it.
Trump had previously said on Twitter that he would veto the National Defense Authorization Act if it did not repeal Section 230. Trump said Section 230, which gives large technology companies the leeway to evade responsibility, poses a serious threat to national security and electoral integrity and that the Country will never be safe if it is allowed to exist.
Trump also objected to a proposed renaming of 10 military facilities named after confederate leaders, as well as a plan that could slow U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and Germany.
