S.F. students sue Baidu for privacy violations: accurate push ads still available after location is turned off

Chen Ting, a third-year student at the Shanghai International Studies University Law School, found that when using Baidu Post Bar, the app could still deliver accurate advertisements based on its geographic location despite having its location permissions turned off.

In May of this year, Chen took Baidu to court for violating her privacy. After four months of jurisdictional disputes, the case is about to enter the first trial.

She hopes that Baidu will stop the infringement, rectify and regulate the misuse of users’ geolocation information to deliver precise ads, and pay a symbolic compensation of one yuan to her.
