On December 14, many factories in Zhejiang received an urgent notice from the local government, asking them to impose power cuts and stop production at all processing plants from now until December 31. Even government offices have been told not to turn on air conditioners when the temperature is above three degrees.
According to a circular issued by Zhejiang Province, provincial units can only turn on heating equipment, such as air conditioners, when the temperature reaches 3 degrees Celsius or below, and the setting temperature must not exceed 16 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the provincial units can turn on the air conditioning and other heating equipment during the meal, immediately after the meal is closed, the setting temperature does not exceed 18℃.
The new regulation has sparked widespread online discontent:
“People in the north rely on heating, while people in the south rely on air conditioning. What do people in the north and south rely on for heating in winter? Suddenly I remembered what experts said: heating is not to keep you warm, but to keep you cool.”
“I have to say that the authorities have been a little too broad in all aspects of people’s normal lives.”
“Speechless, we in Guangdong every time the temperature drops ten degrees to turn on the heater. Not to mention other southern provinces outside Guangdong province, a cold snow on the temperature of a few degrees. And the damp and cold in the south really freezes to the bone, no matter how many clothes you wear. In the north, we have central heating every day. In the south, we can’t even turn on an air conditioner.”
Video posted by netizens shows that all processing plants and small workshops will stop production from now until December 31. All signboards in stores along the street will be turned off. High-power electrical appliances such as air conditioners and heaters will not be used.
