U.S. President Donald Trump said On Dec. 13 that Attorney General William Barr has a responsibility to investigate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, and his business dealings abroad.
“Joe Biden lied during the [presidential] debate,” Mr Trump said in an interview with Fox News on December 13. “He said ‘nothing happened, nothing happened’. Barr should take action. In any case, When Robert Mueller came out on fake news [about Russia] and said it was fake, it turned out there was no ‘collusion.'”
“Barr should have done the same.” Trump said.
As the dust settled, the Office of the Justice Department’s Inspector General revealed that the FBI made a series of “material errors and omissions” in launching its investigation into Trump’s team.
Hunter Biden spoke out last week when he said the Delaware district attorney’s office was investigating his tax affairs. His father Joe Biden’s campaign later confirmed it.
“Joe Biden just said there’s an investigation going on and he doesn’t want to see any bad news about Hunter,” Trump said.
As for Barr’s handling of the Hunt case, Trump tweeted on December 12: “Why didn’t Barr tell the public the truth about the Hunt Biden case before the election? Joe Biden said during the debate that Hunter was right and is right, that he was lying, and the media reported it. It puts the Republican Party at a huge disadvantage.”
An article in the Wall Street Journal on Dec. 10 noted that Barr had known about the Justice Department’s investigation of Hunter as early as this spring, but he didn’t make it public. The report cited a person familiar with the matter as saying Barr did not provide republican lawmakers with information about the investigation or provide further details.
In response to the news, Trump said in another Tweet on December 12: “Very disappointed!”
“If Biden goes to the White House, he and Hunter will be fine, and Barr won’t have to do anything,” Trump said later. These new party killers will be quickly eliminated. We scared them, espionage, treason and more, ‘seeking justice through justice’ taking too long.”
A few weeks ago, Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, issued a statement saying that Hunter Biden’s lawyer and Joe Biden’s brother, James Biden, were not cooperating with the investigation.
In a Nov. 18 supplemental report, Mr. Johnson and sen. ChuckGrassley cited overseas individuals with links to Mr. Hunter as having links to the Chinese communist party and Russia.
Barr was controversial during the campaign. Mr. Barr said in early December that his office and the F.B.I. had found no evidence of fraud that could have changed the outcome of the election. Trump said Barr did not do enough to investigate the election fraud case.
When asked about Barr’s position, Trump said, “Ask me about that in a few weeks.” Trump said they should investigate all fraud. “It’s not a civil case, it’s a criminal offense, very serious criminal offense.”
