Reann Mommsen, a representative of the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet, said the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey conducted a routine mission through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday in accordance with international law. “The passage of this ship through the Taiwan Strait underscores America’s commitment to a free and open Asia-Pacific region. The United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.”

The last time was on Aug. 18, when the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer USS Mustin sailed through the Taiwan Strait and crossed the middle line near The Chinese mainland after a joint training exercise with the Japanese Maritime Self-defense Force in the East China Sea. In response, the Chinese military said it had ordered naval and air forces to track the ship throughout, and slammed the U.S. move as “extremely dangerous.”

At about the same time as the meeting with Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, Chinese People’s Liberation Army aircraft appeared over the Taiwan Strait and briefly crossed the middle line in succession, apparently touching a nerve in Beijing over the warming of US-Taiwan relations.

The passage of the GUIDEd-missile destroyer USS Halsey through the Taiwan Strait is also significant at a time when the Czech Republic, led by The President of the Senate Vitzi, is visiting Taiwan despite intense pressure from Beijing.
