China has detained Cheng Lei, an Australian broadcaster of the China Global Television Network

Amid the tension between Australia and China, Marise Payne, Australia’s foreign minister, said in a statement today that Cheng Lei, an Australian citizen who works as a anchor for China Global Television Network, the state broadcaster, had been detained by Chinese authorities for two weeks. The source did not mention a possible reason for Cheng’s detention.

Chinese authorities have detained Cheng Lei, an Australian citizen working as a host for China Global Television Network, for two weeks, Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Paine said Monday, CNA reported today.

Reuters said Cheng Lei, an Australian of Chinese descent, was working in Beijing for the state-run China Global Television Network (CGTN). Paine’s statement said the Australian government received formal notification of Cheng’s detention from Chinese authorities on Thursday. Ms Cheng’s family in Australia also issued a statement saying they hoped for a “satisfactory and timely outcome” and were in close consultation with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

According to Paine said, Australian officials had 27 through the video link, and stay in the detention center of cheng Lei telephone. Pine added that consular officials will continue to support Cheng lei and her family.

According to CNA, the relationship between Beijing and Canberra has been strained since the Australian government requested an international investigation into the origin of novel Coronavirus. Beijing has since imposed trade tariffs and anti-dumping investigations on a variety of Australian goods.
