A review of the 2012 Kunming mass murder case

readme

In 2012, When I was working for Southern People Weekly, I went to Jinning, Yunnan to investigate a serial murder case spanning more than ten years. On April 25, a teenager disappeared in Jincheng town, Yunnan province, leading to the disappearance of more than 17 local teenagers. The killer was a farmer who everyone thought he was “abnormal”, but no one bothered because he had nothing to do with himself. Unlike the bizarre rural China that has gone viral on social networking sites, there is nothing theatrical about the real countryside, and some of the things that happen are far more brutal than the performance. This article is from Jincheng, Kunming.

On May 7, 2012, Zhang Yongming, the mastermind of the serial disappearance of teenagers in Jinning, Kunming, Yunnan, was taken away from his home in Nanmen Village, Jincheng Town, Jinning County, by Kunming police. A total of 17 people have gone missing in Jincheng, all of them teenagers between the ages of 12 and 22, except two people aged 37 and 80.

Two days later, police in Kunming dug up dismembered remains at Zhang’s home and in a crop field. A source close to the police said at least 10 bodies had been disinterred that day.

It was a preventable tragedy. But the carelessness of the parents, the indifference of the villagers and the irresponsibility of the Jincheng police combined to provide time and opportunity for the mastermind, Zhang Yongming, to commit a series of crimes.

Until the last victim — The appearance of Han Yao, his mother Cheng Lian Yan in the report was rejected, insisted on going around, for help, just let so many years hidden in the village secret surfaced.

At about 22:00 on April 25, 2012, Cheng Lianyan, the mother of Han Yao, received a phone call from li Chaoxiong, his son’s classmate, asking if Han Yao had gone home. Cheng Lian Yan replied “did not come back”, hung up the phone for convenience.

This day is just 20 years old Han Yao to kunming rock soil engineering survey Co., LTD. 13 days to work. At this time, it was still more than two months before he graduated from Kunming Business School.

at the beginning, into lian Yan did not put this matter in mind, until the daughter Hannah called to say brother disappeared, she was a little anxious. “He has no friends in the area and has only been there for ten days. It’s impossible for him to give up his job and go out to play. He can’t be so irresponsible.” Cheng Lian Yan muttered.

Cheng Lian Yan called Li Chaoxiong back, just know the missing son has been more than 12 hours.

At about 7 a.m. that day, Han Yao and other colleagues were sent to a construction site near dagou, south gate of Jincheng city. An hour later, The site manager, Guo Naiqiang, asked Han yao to go to the office area alone to get a copy — it was about 20 minutes’ walk from the site to the office.

“At that time, everyone was busy at the construction site, and I couldn’t leave, so I didn’t have much control.” Guo naiqiang said. “At that time, everyone was busy at the construction site and I couldn’t leave, so I didn’t have much control over it.” Guo naiqiang said. This day, Han Yao’s colleague Xian Qiwei did not go to work. When Han Yao arrived at the office, he was still sleeping. Han Yao got the information, fresh Qiwei advised him not to go to the site, together with the Internet. Han Yao did not promise, said the people on the site are still waiting, he should be responsible for the work.

Before going out, Han Yao also gave his ID card to Fresh Qiwei, let him take to the Internet. “I also looked at the time. It was about 9:10.”

In order to save time, Han Yao did not go before often walk that road, but from the back door of the office area out, cut an old road has been abandoned. At the time, the old road was occupied by piles of rubbish, not far from which lay a dense line of trees.

But until 10 am, the site director Guo Naiqiang still did not wait for Han Yao back to the site. He called Han Yao’s cell phone and found it had been turned off. “At that time, everyone was busy at the construction site, and I couldn’t leave, so I didn’t have much control.” Guo naiqiang said.

until 22 o ‘clock in the evening, still do not see Han Yao back to the dormitory of the office area, Guo Nai Qiang just let Li Zhaoxiong to Han Yao’s home made a phone call. know son missing, cheng Lian Yan leaning on the bedside at home, played a night of Han Yao’s phone, “has been shut down.

the next morning, into lian Yan and his family together to jincheng police station to report. At this point, Han Yao has been missing for 24 hours. Cheng said the police advised him not to worry too much, as the child might have been in a mood with someone or gone out to meet online friends. But she told police it was absolutely impossible, “because of his personality, whatever he did, he would tell his friends at home or around him.”

in cheng Lian Yan and other family members in every possible request, jincheng police station 2 staff followed them to han Yao missing place to see. Cheng Lian Yan met an old man about 60 years old, she took the picture of her son out to the old man to see, said his son was missing here, asked the old man did not see the child. The old man said no, but then told her that many children had been lost, but none of them had been found.

Cheng Lian Yan quickly told the matter to the accompanying 2 police, but was scolded, “They are fabricating rumors, don’t listen to them nonsense! You have to trust the police.”

into the heart of Yan had a question, after a day apart, into lian Yan again to find the old man, asked in detail the situation of many missing children. When Cheng Lianyan again sent this information back to the Jincheng police station, the two sides almost triggered a conflict.

“You do not act, we checked, to give you a reflection, you do not care, too irresponsible.”

“What proof do you have that they are missing?”

A word from the police thoroughly into lian Yan angered, she decided to find out.

Over the next two days, Cheng visited and found the parents of four missing children in nearby villages, asked them to write down the story of their children’s disappearance and put fingerprints on it. She also asked for photos of the missing children. “Didn’t they say I had no proof? I’ll prove it to them.”

Cheng Lian Yan found that the missing children are teenagers, and the location of the missing are located near the South gate big ditch, the time is also 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. After the reporter found out, Zhang Yongming’s farm is here, from his old house straight also only 2 kilometers.

This time, however, Cheng did not give the materials to the Jincheng police station, but found the local media. “I don’t trust them anymore, and if they want to find out, they don’t need us to provide it.”

On May 3, local media in Kunming made headlines with reports of missing teenagers. That night, kunming police formed a task force.

Four days later, Zhang was taken away from his home, 225 Nanmen Street, Jincheng Town, Jinning County, by Kunming police.

On May 9, the Jinning county public security bureau informed Cheng lianyan that Han Yao had been killed, the body was dismembered, and found Han Yao’s cell phone, phone card, bank card and other items in Zhang Yongming’s residence. On the same day, kunming police sealed off Zhang’s old house and farmland.

A person close to the police said at least 10 bodies were recovered that day from Zhang’s home and in the ground. This has not been confirmed by the police.

The police did, however, retrieve large woven bags from Zhang’s home and fields that day. A villager who watched the scene told reporters that the remains in the woven bag were clearly visible. “Many bones are one by one, and the longest one is only about 5 cm.”

An old man who often relaxes in the ancient Dian Park said that in the afternoon of the same day that Han Yao disappeared, Zhang Yongming was still playing chess in the park with others. “I didn’t see anything unusual. I didn’t talk very much. I didn’t laugh very much.”

According to the villagers, Zhang yongming, 56, is solitary and unmarried, and never greats with the villagers in his daily life. Few people in the village spoke to him. ‘Often I saw him walking around the village with a hoe in his hand, and sometimes I saw him sitting at his door, looking quietly at the path in front of his house.’

Li Shukai, who rents next door to Mr. Zhang, said Mr. Zhang often turned the TV up loud in the middle of the night and his family’s dog would bark along with him. “Everyone thought he was a little abnormal, but they didn’t think he had anything to do with them, so no one bothered to ask.”

When Zhang yongming was 18, he had a history of killing people. At that time, his parents were still alive.

Zhang yongming killed his classmate Lu Turong. One day in 1974, Lu Turong stayed at Zhang Yongming’s home after dinner. Two people sleep in the same bed. At about 4 am, Lu Turong felt a pain in his neck. He woke up and found that Zhang Yongming was holding a kitchen knife to cut at him again. Instinctively, Lu Turong stopped the knife with his hand.

Lu’s cry woke up Zhang Yongming’s parents sleeping next door, they rushed over to grab Zhang Yongming’s kitchen knife, Lu Turong was able to save his life. When lu Returned home, he found that his body was covered in blood, with eight knife wounds on his neck, face and hands. Today, the scars from these cuts are still visible on his body.

“We talked and laughed before we went to bed, and we had never quarrelled before.” Lu Turong still can not understand why Zhang Yongming wanted to kill him.

But this time, Zhang was released after six months in prison.

Four years later, Zhang did it again. This time, he killed 16-year-old Yang Shurong. Yang Shurong worked with Zhang Yongming in the same brick kiln. One day, he helped the production team sell rice and put 18 yuan in his pocket. On the same day, Zhang tricked Yang Shurong into coming to his home and strangled him.

Yang’s body was found stuffed in a newly dug cave near Nanmen village. “The whole body was curled up, clothes and shoes had been removed, hands and feet had been broken.”

The case was solved half a month later, and Zhang Yongming, who fled to nearby Chengjiang County, was arrested. Zhang was later sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a Court in The city of Jinning, but was later sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment for unspecified reasons. Zhang returned home in 1997 after 19 years in prison. By this time, neither of his parents was there.

Nanmen village for Zhang Yongming, and gave him some land. In the first few years, villagers said, Zhang was particularly diligent, carrying a hoe to the fields and planting vegetables. “He lives alone, and has never had anything to do with his brothers and sisters.”

Ten years later, the first case of disappearance occurred in Nanmen Village.

“Every time the festival times homesick, children in the outside miss their parents,” the crosswinds read, “Hope son early return.”

Li yudong’s couplets have not been changed since his son, Li Hanxiong, disappeared. Li hanxiong was 12 years old when he disappeared.

May 1, 2007, the holiday at home li Hanxiong early with his father Li Yudong went out to work. At about 9:30 am, the sun was shining high, and Li Yudong, who was very fond of his son, asked Li Hanxiong to go home early and help him cook the rice that had been washed out in the morning.

Li told Li that he had left one of his clothes in another field and returned home with it. The road to the other land just passed a ridge of the river beside zhang Yongming’s wasteland.

When Li Yudong returned home at noon, he found that everything in the kitchen had not been touched and that his son Li Hanxiong had not come back. He immediately called several relatives, who said they had not seen the child. Li Yudong did not think much, think that the child is more playful, run to the classmate’s home.

After lunch, Li Yudong thought how feel wrong, after looking for the whole south gate village, he began to visit the nearby villages, but still no son.

At about 5 PM, Li went to jincheng police station to report the case. The police told him that he could not file a case within 24 hours and urged him to go back and look for it. “The child may have gone to an Internet cafe, or a playground or something like that.”

After returning home, Li Yudong did not dare to close the door for fear that his child would not get in after coming home. That night, Li Yudong dreamt in a daze that Li Hanxiong had come home. But woke up, only to see his wife in the side crying.

After Li Hanxiong leaves the land that work, the Li Guiying of the village sees him appear on ridge of the river, after, did not see again. According to Li Guiying, after Li Hanxiong did not see for half an hour, Zhang Yongming appeared on the ridge of the river and walked back and forth twice, then he did not see.

‘Other people in the field saw it, too.’ Li Guiying said. But no one came forward to inquire.

Li Yudong feedback these situations to jincheng police station, very sorry, again did not get the attention of the police. “They said they knew, and they didn’t send anyone to look into it.”

So when Mr. Li learned of another incident involving Mr. Zhang a year later, he did not speak to the police. “Lost faith in their police.”

In 2008, Yang Minggui, from another village, Fenghuang Mountain, was on his way home from school to Zhang’s fields when zhang tricked him into going to the fields for helping carry wood. Zhang Yongming took advantage of Yang Minggui squat moment, holding the rope from behind his neck.

Yang finally managed to break the rope around his neck and escape. After returning home, Yang Minggui told his parents about it. However, his parents did not choose to call the police.

“Everyone in the village knows about it, but his parents think it’s no big deal that the children have come back, let alone us.” “Said one villager. However, the incident was eventually reported to jincheng police station by Xie Shunsheng, the father of another missing child. Mr. Xie said he called Tian Chun, the deputy director of the police station, hoping the station would investigate Mr. Zhang. But a week later, Xie was told, “I checked. Zhang yongming is a psychopath.”

Once again, Zhang escaped unharmed until the next person he had strangled appeared.

A review of the 2012 Kunming mass murder case
After 3 years, Zhang Yongming chose the target in same village person small chapter (should the party request is alias) on the body. Their houses are only a few hundred metres apart.

On December 1, 2011, it was around 22:00 when Xiao Zhang finished his evening self-study. It is only 200 meters from his school, Jinning No. 2 Middle School, to his home. About five minutes after xiao Zhang walked out of the school gate, she saw Zhang Yongming walking empty-handed in front of her, about ten steps apart. On the next slope, Xiao Zhang trotted in front of Zhang, but little did he know that Zhang had crept up on him.

“The steps were so light that I heard nothing. I didn’t know him at that time, but later I heard from my parents that it was Zhang Yongming from a village.”

When zhang was only about 20 meters away from home, he felt a belt (as he later learned) shake his head and instinctively grasped it with his left hand. He repeatedly elbowed Zhang on the head and waist with his right hand as he dragged him along.

Her left hand holds the strap, which provides a buffer for Zhang’s neck. He was sure he could, but he didn’t. He felt that if he had shouted for help, he might have made Zhang even more irrational and worse for himself.

After being dragged about five meters, Xiao Zhang saw a man coming out of his house. He began to shout, “Here is a thief, come and help.”

Zhang Yongming saw someone running over, he immediately released his grip on the belt, turned to run. But did not want to be a small chapter grabbed the clothes, fell under a tree. Rushed over the companion and small chapter together zhang Yongming pressure under the body, and began to shout home parents.

Mother came out after the police, 10 minutes later, jincheng police station arrived.

In this interval, the mother of small chapter asks Zhang Yongming, oneself home have no wrong with him have no enemy, why want to kill her child. Zhang yongming smiled and said, “Just kidding.” This reason is also used later in answering police questions.

Instead of going to the police station, however, the police took Zhang and Zhang directly to the hospital. About 20 minutes, Zhang Yongming helped Xiao Zhang pay more than 30 yuan of medical expenses, directly back home. Police never searched for Mr. Zhang or Mr. Zhang again.

Earlier that year, six teenagers and an 80-year-old man were missing in the vicinity of Nanmen Dagou. Once again, however, all the information fell on deaf ears. When the families of all the missing persons reported to the police, they were told to wait for information, and the police did not tell them that there had been several cases of missing persons in the same area.

Until Han Yao was killed.

“A casual visit shows that there are too many doubts about Zhang Yongming. Why are they (the police) professional can not investigate, this is their malfeasance? If they had paid attention from the start, they could have saved at least a few lives.” Han Yao’s cousin Han Wei told reporters so.

conclusion

On May 27, 2012, Xinhua News Agency announced that “A series of homicides in Jinning, Yunnan province have been solved, and Zhang Yongming has been arrested on suspicion of intentional homicide. The police have confirmed that 11 men were killed.”

“Since 2008, Zhang has attacked and killed passers-by near his residence and destroyed evidence of his crimes by shredding, burning and burying bodies,” the report said.

The “incomplete list of missing persons” compiled by villagers and journalists has not been confirmed by the police.

More than four years later, apart from the fact that Zhang was shot dead at the end of 2012, much of the information about him has not been made public.
