After a rainstorm, the story of 25 dead

Under the Guangqumen Bridge

Ding Zhijian (1980-2012.7.21)

Ding Zhijian, the 32-year-old editorial director of the young children’s magazine “Ah Ah Bear”, died during a live microblogging session that lasted more than three hours.

At 19:40 on July 21, his wife Qiu Yan, who had finished cooking and was waiting for her husband to come home for dinner, received a distress call from him, saying that he had been struggling in the car for a long time, couldn’t open the door and was having a hard time breathing.

At 20:00, Qiu Yan received the last distress call, hung up the phone and ran outside with a hammer. The company’s first-ever “The New York Times” was held at the New York International Airport. The hospital test report showed that Ding Zhijian died of drowning, with contusions to both his hands and skull.

Ten days ago, Ding Zhijian had just been promoted to be the president of a branch of Longmen Books, where the magazine was located. Because of his small stature and lively personality, his friends often called him “Ding Ding”.

At the age of 16, he came to Beijing from Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, and went to school, worked, fell in love, got married, and had children. This young man from abroad is undoubtedly lucky: in 2009, he had a daughter, Qiuqiu; last year, he replaced his 60 square meter one-bedroom apartment with an 80 square meter house outside the East Fourth Ring Road, and this year, he replaced it with this Hyundai Tucson SUV. He had a Beijing household registration that many people dream of.

His death triggered public opinion to think about urban infrastructure construction and rescue, and many people also picked up various tools to knock on the car windows. Many people lamented that life cannot wait, while people’s common sense of self-help is so lacking.

In 27 years of working in Beijing, I have never lived in a house with a toilet

Luo Jin (1994.10.14-2012.7.21)

Born in 1994, Luo Jinben had a twin brother who died after only 7 days of life. His father, Luo Xifu, named the remaining child “Jing” to commemorate his birth in the capital. Later, he decided that the word “Jing” was too big to raise, so he changed it to “Jin”.

On July 5, Luo Jin embarked on a northbound train with a fellow villager and stood for 15 hours to reach Beijing.

Luo Jin was sent home to rural Anhui soon after he was born, and he has only been to Beijing three times in his life. “Inside the house, he called one phone call after another, asking me to come home and pick him up.” Luo Schoolfu said the child was happy to be with his parents.

Most of the time in Beijing, Luo Jin is nestled in a 12-square-meter rental bungalow in Xinzhuang Village, Dongfeng Township, Chaoyang District, watching TV or working at a nearby stall, helping to grill lamb skewers.

At 7:30 p.m. on July 21, after a long day of watching TV at home, Luo Jin went to the bathroom with an umbrella when the bridge was hidden in the rain. At 8:00 p.m., Luo was looking for his son, but he called 110 at 1:46 a.m. On July 22, he went to the police station to register, thinking that his son might have gone to an Internet cafe.

The next morning at 7:00 a.m., when the water receded, neighbors first saw Luo’s slippers on the bridge outside the house, then the ruined umbrella in the ditch, and the body stuck in the mud a meter deep.

The furthest he has taken his son is to Chaoyang Park, 900 meters from his home. After 27 years of walking the streets of the city to repair pressure cookers, Luo has never lived in a house with a toilet.

He said his son may have stepped on the toilet and fell into the river on his way to the toilet. An old villager sighed: If there was a guardrail on this side, it would be fine.

Luo Jin left behind a satchel brought from his hometown and a pair of Nike high-fashion shoes. The shoes were bought for him by his father at a stall for 60 yuan to wear when he was working.

In 2011, Luo Jin worked in Beijing for a month and a half during the summer holidays, helping to grill lamb skewers and earning 1500 yuan. He bought himself a $100 cell phone, bought his brother Luo Lin a pair of sunglasses, and gave the rest of the money to his father.

When Luo learned of his brother’s death, he came from Hefei the next day. He covered his eyes with his right hand and tears flowed down from his fingers. He said his brother was introverted and understanding, and usually saved money secretly. On his parents’ birthday, give them small gifts like lighters and hair cards.

A clock with a rhythm

Duan Baolin (41 years old)

For the past five years, Duan Baolin’s life has been a rhythmic clock.

He always wears dark blue overalls, always walks the road from Dajiaoting Wal-Mart to Guanyintang Village residential area every day, rides his bicycle, goes to work and leaves work, and the theme of his life is: making money and raising a family.

This is not a man with a vivid expression, he can be any one of the pile of Wal-Mart employees.

The fruit and vegetable counter colleagues, in addition to “serious work, treat people well” such, can be deducted from the majority of good people’s comments, others almost can not think of him.

At home, he is the irreplaceable pillar. Can not afford to buy a house, Duan Baolin also live with his parents who have aged, plus a daughter in junior high school. He is the only strong workforce in the family.

The Duan family lives in an old hutong with a history of more than half a century, and it is said that the road in front of the house used to be able to “run 130 cars”, because of repeated increases in construction, space has been repeatedly dumped, and now only two people can pass through side by side.

On the night of July 21, the clock stopped unexpectedly on its way home. It is less than a kilometer from home, Huaneng railroad bridge under that low-lying area, more than two meters from the horizontal line. Duan Baolin tried a jerk over the big puddle, but even the man with the car irreversibly sunk, struggling hard and failed.

His body was quickly identified early the following morning because of the dark blue overalls.

The small family that left Duan Paulin collapsed and turned into a family appendage. The family quickly formed a committee after Duan’s death, and Yue Pei, who worked in the media, became the “voice” to negotiate compensation with Wal-Mart; the family fought over “the old lady’s interview with a Beijing newspaper”; and before the negotiations ran into difficulties, the family was reluctant to let more people know what happened. The family was reluctant to let more people restore the living Duan Baolin and cause trouble.

So the dead Duan Baolin went on to finish the pendulum track of his return home in such a way. Maybe this last knock was his only chance to make his family’s life better.

A life without a story

Zhang Jinxiang (about 60 years old) Zhang Jinwang (about 40 years old)

After a burst of lightning and thunder, the sky instantly pulled black, and pieces of tiles, branches and colorful steel sheets flew all over the sky.

At 1:40 p.m. on July 21, 2012, a tornado swept away dozens of houses in the Zaolinzhuang village of Zhangjiawan, Tongzhou, in a dozen seconds. Zhang Jinxiang and Zhang Jinwang brothers were crushed to death in a colorful steel plate house under construction at the north entrance of Zaolinzhuang.

After the wheat harvest in June this year, the two brothers just arrived from their hometown in Heze, Shandong. After this year’s Spring Festival, they first came to work in this village to repair the house. A worker said, the black wind swept, not yet back, the warehouse has all collapsed, the two brothers were crushed under a door, when the Zhang family did not move.

Their wives have been the first to rush to the village, in addition to these, the factory workers can not say anything, they know nothing about the two brothers’ family.

The only legacy

Guo Ruihai (1967? – 2012.7.21)

The last time acquaintances saw the old bachelor Guo Ruihai was at 10:00 am on July 19, 2012.

He walked 200 meters from the deserted construction site he was guarding to the supermarket at the entrance of Zaolinzhuang village in Tongzhou, bought $8 worth of vegetables and $6 worth of steamed buns, and as he left he told the owner, “Keep hanging on to my account.”

More than 50 hours later, Guo Hairui was found dead on the inside of the iron gate of the construction site, which was the third person to die in Zaolinzhuang village that day due to the tornado.

For his cause of death, next to the car wash room people believe that he was thrown to the iron door by the tornado hit the head and died. The “official story” of the village cadres is that Lao Guo died because he tried to close the door when the tornado arrived and was struck by lightning.

The 45-year-old Hebei Langfang farmers, four years ago to join the sister married to the village of Zao Linzhuang, in his brother-in-law contracted to watch the door on the site. Last year, the sister’s family moved to town, so the honest bachelor lived a life of non-interaction, almost isolated from the world.

The only legacy left by this foreigner is the 2,000 yuan owed to the kiosk on credit.

The word “death” is taboo

Wang Jing (1979.12.6-2012.7.21)

Wang Jing is shy about mentioning the word “death”. It must have been the rainstorm last year that trapped her in the office, and she was so annoyed that she turned against her introverted and gentle norm and wrote on Qzone, “This is the end. In this year’s even bigger rainstorm, she arrived home on time, as she had hoped, only to literally drown at home – in a rented basement.

Many cars are afraid to drive forward as traffic congestion arises after Majiapu West Road in Fengtai District, Beijing, was flooded again during heavy rain on July 27, 2015. (Photo: CFP) Many cars are afraid to drive forward as traffic congestion is generated. (Photo: CFP)

The first half of her life was spent in the village of Wangjia in Liaocheng, Shandong province, where her parents gave her a second baby girl in 1979 with a name that was unrecognizable to her, and then continued until her fourth child was finally a boy.

For the rest of her life, she moved to the Wulidian district in the southern half of Beijing, where she spent most of her time accompanying her husband, Teng Changfeng, to open a drinking water store. Even after giving birth to a child, she switched to selling knife-cutting noodles, and then went to a photocopying company as a contract worker for publicity, people in the district still did not know her last name, but only called her “the woman from the water store.

Wang Jing has never been to the ground and does not want to go back to the countryside, she always wants to have more opportunities in Beijing. It is said that she has big eyes, loves to wear skirts, and looks young and beautiful.

She is slowly evolving from rural to urban, but the only thing that hasn’t changed is her life. 2006 saw the birth of her son, Teng Tianyu, and the family moved into the basement to save money. They wanted to save some money and move out, but it was a six-year stay.

Wang Jing has been torn by the fact that the miasma in the basement may have caused the child to suffer from a skin disease with small red spots all over his body, and eventually had to send the child back home. Her husband later moved to a unit dormitory elsewhere, she continued her life in the basement, coming home from work every day to close the two doors, rarely interacting with people.

So, in the rainstorm of July 21, 2012, she did not hear the noisy sound of fleeing outside the door.

Originally did not think the rainwater surprisingly pour into the house until over a person high. Wang Jing will not water, holding the wall trying to get back to the ground. Not yet sure whether it was the three-hour-long soaking of sewage, or the leaky meter box in the aisle, that became the culprit that killed her.

Eventually she floated up like a leaf and her life was cut short on the aisle in front of her house.

Celebration of Life

Wang Jiaojiao (1990.7.20-2012.7.21)

A friend arranged for Wang Jiaojiao’s 23rd birthday celebration on July 21, when they went to see lavender at the Blues Manor in Chaoyang District.

Wang Jiaojiao loves to laugh and enjoys seeing beautiful things. Originally her birthday was July 20, but she was too busy on that day. This vocational high school student from rural Wenxi County, Shanxi Province, has always been very busy.

Six summers ago, she came to Beijing wearing a pair of slippers. At first, she didn’t adapt to the big city and kept crying when she called her mother.

She taught herself computer science and changed jobs until she came to this restaurant in Chaoyang District, which she loves now. Starting as a waitress, she worked her way up to finance, and her salary rose from 600 to more than 4,000.

In the eyes of her boss, Wang Jiaojiao is a down-to-earth child: “She is so well liked in the store that a good friend even bought her a ticket to her hometown.”

Wang Jiaojiao seldom buys clothes. Last time before leaving home, the train was about to leave in half an hour, and she picked the cheapest place to buy a T-shirt and a pair of pants. She complained to her sister-in-law, Song Wenxiu, that the clothes in Beijing were too expensive.

When her cousin came to Beijing, Wang Jiaojiao took her to the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Summer Palace, and gave a cell phone to her own brother. When she returned home, she made a lion ball for her father, Wang Jingquan, with the words “All things are prosperous at home” written on it. The biggest expense she has conceived is to save money for a nearsighted eye surgery.

The ditch that swallowed her, along with the surrounding road has been dug up to the point of no return. Relatives from her hometown could only hear descriptions of the ditch with no guardrails in Jinzhan Township, Chaoyang District, heavy rain, and a three-way intersection. Wang Jiaojiao’s friend was walking diagonally in front of her. Wang Jiaojiao screamed and pulled her friend’s hand, and there was a little girl next to her, who also suddenly pulled the friend’s hand, and the three of them slipped into the sewage together.

She left the world in front of her friends. The relic is a mud-soaked carry-on bag.

Not long ago she called her mother and said excitedly that her accounting certificate had been taken, but the certificate had not been issued yet. She always wanted her parents to come to Beijing for a turn.

I’m holding the tree, don’t come over

Wang Jiansheng (30 years old)

Wang Jiansheng, a villager in the fodder business, was plowed out by his family and townspeople. The moment the body was found, his brother Wang Jianxue hammered the ground long sobbing – that video of the family search in Hancunhe Town, Fangshan District, became the most shocking image after the disaster.

At ten o’clock on the evening of July 21, Wang Jiansheng was stranded when he drove back to the village entrance.

The initial arrival on the scene was Wang Jianxue and his father. At 10:30 at night, as the flood raged, the two hissed his name loudly. A voice came through at midnight, “I’m holding the tree, you must not come over!” Once again, there was silence.

Dozens of folks arrived after midnight, flashlight along the banks of the river groping, not letting go of every grass and trees. Wang Jianxue hissed all night, bare hands shaving stones more than.

Twelve hours later, three relatives from the north of the river who knew the water arrived and jumped into the water. On the shore, folks continued to search. Several bodies were found in close to two days, but not Wang Jiansheng.

Forty hours later, Wang Jianxue hissed at the woods and water: “Wang Jiansheng, you come out! Mom and sister-in-law are waiting for you. ……” His noise was hoarse again.

Another hour and a half, as if all the hissing was heard, at the moment Wang Jianxue lowered his head to light a cigarette, he saw a person floating on the surface of the water. I don’t know who shouted, “Wang Jiansheng, go home!” The crowd then repeated in a loud voice.

–This is really Wang Jiansheng.

The man who loved me most in the world is gone

Hou Wanlin (1963.2.25-2012.7.21)

Hou Wanlin used to go fishing every day during his lifetime.

After his father’s body was recovered, his daughter Hou Shuai wrote an obituary on Weibo saying, “It is said that my daughter was my father’s lover in his previous life, and the man who loved me most in the world is gone, but I haven’t let him live a good life.”

Hou Wanlin, 49, was a retired employee of the former Shijingshan Forestry Bureau.

He was killed on the night of July 21 on his way home by car.

On the first day of work

Jia Xiaohan (1993-2012.7.21)

The moment the flood hit, Jia Xiaohan, a 19-year-old girl, loudly reminded her sister, “Hold on to the tree!”

At 5:00 p.m. on July 21, Jia Xiaohan and her sister returned home in a Fiat car driven by her stepmother, Li Yujie. When they arrived at the village of Shilou Town, Fangshan District, the flood came rushing in. In the rapids, Li Yujie panicked and put down the car window, trying to push the back door open a narrow gap, the two daughters to the roof of the car.

Jia Xiao Han saw a tree at the end of the car, busy climbing, and then loudly reminded his sister also hold tight to the tree. When the next turbulent wave hit, she was knocked off.

Her father, Jia Donghui, remembered that his daughter had said her dream was to become a good early childhood teacher.

Before she was killed, Jia Xiaohan was an early childhood teacher training student at Beijing Advanced Economic and Trade Technology School and was about to enter her second year of college. She loved music and dance, and won second prize in a competition organized by the school before summer vacation.

One day ago, Jia Xiaohan found a part-time summer job. The job was as an operator, and the agreed monthly base salary was 1,800 yuan. At that time, she also smiled and told her stepmother, Li Yujie, to give her money to buy food when she received her salary.

July 21 was her first day of work.

Dream of being on TV

Wang Yonghui (1989.9.25-2012.7.21)

In the memory of her hairdresser Xu Fei, 13-year-old Yonghui stood in front of the classroom, still just a little girl, “really good-looking”.

At that time, Wang Yonghui began to learn dance, read Shandong Laiyang Aihua Art School, Yantai Art School, at the age of 18, came to Beijing alone to make a living.

As she struggled alone in Beijing, she often blamed herself for not being competitive and good enough. She lived with a friend in a small bungalow of about 18 square meters near the subway station of Bajiao Amusement Park in Shijingshan.

In 2009, Wang became an instructor at the Shijingshan Alder International Fitness Club, teaching jazz dance, belly dance and street dance. Most of her spare time, she is also working with a teacher to practice singing and dancing, recording video. The teacher said he was very optimistic about her 1 meter 65, beautiful appearance, and promised to find a way to get her back on TV.

Wang Yonghui’s biggest wish is to be on the stage of CCTV Avenue of Stars.

Wang Yonghui’s parents run a very famous restaurant in their hometown of Laiyang, but she “never play temper” because of her family’s good condition. Xu Fei said she was a bit childish and always happy, often asking silly questions like, “Sister, you’re 24 years old this year and you’re a rabbit, what are you 25 years old next year?” Silly questions.

When she sees people around her upset and frowning, she also asks what’s going on one after another.

On July 19, Wang Yonghui went to the studio to take a set of portraits, and the next day she sent the selfie of the day to Xu Fei. The two agreed with each other to shoot again when they have time.

July 21 at 9 p.m., on the way home after dinner, Wang Yonghui passed a construction site on Gugu Street in Shijingshan District. The fence was short and had a deep pit inside. Fellow friends first tripped over the rope and fell, then Wang Yonghui also fell in.

The beauty-loving Wang Yonghui was wearing a black and white striped dress given to her by Xu Fei that day, her eyes half-open and with black contacts. She never woke up again.

Class President

Zheng Dongjie (1984? – 2012. 7.21)

On July 24, Zheng Dongjie’s child will celebrate her full birthday. She is gentle and gentle, especially family-oriented, and has been married to her husband for less than two years and lives in harmony.

She is remembered by her colleagues as a steady and disciplined team leader in the customer service center of New China Life Insurance. As a team leader, she sometimes feels more like managing herself than managing others.

Once an old colleague returned to his original unit for a visit, Zheng Dongjie waited in the unit for nearly two hours after work in order to catch up. And Zheng Dongjie usually takes two hours for a one-way trip home.

She likes to read books, especially biographies of celebrities and inspirational reading, such as Lee Kai-fu. This may be the motivation for her consistent positive drive.

On the night of the 21st, Zheng Dongjie lost contact with everyone. 22nd, the news of distress came.

So far, colleagues still do not know what happened in the last moment of her life.

Never saw the weather forecast

Zhang En (5 years old)

Zhang En’s father Zhang Xiaodong (phonetic) and mother Zhang Yan Yan (phonetic) work in a slate factory in Lou Zishui Village, Beijing, and he has two sisters, and all three children usually stay back home in Henan.

This time, because he missed them too much, Zhang Xiaodong brought his son Zhang En to Beijing to play. They usually live in the slate factory, no TV set, and have never seen the weather forecast.

According to Zhang Xiaodong’s worker Zhu Xianhe, the place where the slate factory is located is low-lying and will be flooded when it rains heavily. On the day of the incident, the owner of the slate factory came to the factory at 5:00 pm, when the rain was not very strong, the boss did not let them move.

When the flood later broke open the door of the plant, seeing the water level rising, they panicked.

The adults carried their children on their backs and moved out spontaneously, arm in arm. The mother, Zhang Yanyan, was unable to stand and was swept into the water, and Zhang En also fell into the turbulence. This fall became the farewell of mother and son.

Married for seven years, romantic for a while

Shanshan Shi (1982.6.30-2012.7.21)

After graduating from junior high school, Shi Shanshan found her first job in a slaughter and processing plant and met her colleague Liu Xiaosong, who graduated from secondary school.

After five years of acquaintance and seven years of marriage, in twelve years, this couple from the southwest chapter of Hanchunhe Township had never been to the cinema together, and had only “romanced” on a snowy day in 2003, walking in the snow in Taoranting Park.

But she is content.

Shi Shanshan likes shopping, playing Connect the Dots, Diamond Obsession and Stealing Vegetables, eating shredded pork in Beijing sauce, sweet and sour pork, fried stinky tofu, spicy hotpot and her husband’s baked chicken wings. Every holiday, the husband cooks himself, saying, “She eats 20 at a time, not counting the rest.” The couple’s greatest joy is to take their children shopping for titles.

The couple had discussed that they would take another wedding photo when their daughter was a little older. This is no longer possible to achieve.

On the night of July 21, on the way from work at the pharmaceutical factory, Shi Shanshan was swept away by the current.

In the arms of her mother

Cao Fuxiang (38 years old) Xia Jingya (8 months)

Cao Fuxiang, 38, from Henan Province, came to Beijing with her family a few years ago and rented a place in Changleji Village, Qinglonghu Town, Fangshan District, working with her sister in a furniture factory in the village.

Flash floods triggered by heavy rains on July 21 washed down the wall of a small courtyard on the east bank of the river in the village.

Eight-month-old Julia Xia was in the arms of her mother, Cao Fuxiang. Mother and daughter were swallowed by the rapid flood and disappeared into a tributary of the Downer River.

Julia Xia had a twin sister, who was in the arms of her sister-in-law at the time, and survived with just a little fever.

Business picks up

Tian Lijuan (1971.7. 25-2012.7.21)

Liu Xiaowei (1971?-2012.7.21)

Tian Lijuan has been opening an Avon store for two or three years.

With limited funds, she chose a simple house in Zhao Shan district of Shijingshan as the storefront, the back of which was against the mountain and leaked when it rained. The store is her heart and soul, and business was not good at the beginning because there were mostly middle-aged people in the neighborhood, and only in the past two years did it get better.

On July 21, the couple went to the store in the rain because so many products and clothes were over there. They were sweeping the water in the inner room when the mudslide broke through the wall at once, and one wall collapsed instantly, burying them underneath.

The couple are both locals from Shijingshan, Beijing. Last week, because of the demolition, they just moved back to their new home. When the new house didn’t come down, the couple would also take their children to live in the store, “Fortunately, they didn’t take their children that day.”

The only daughter is 6 years old, just started preschool in July and has been learning to dance. The company is looking forward to her attending a school of her choice when she starts elementary school next year. In a forum for parenting mothers, Tian Lijuan’s friends could not accept the news of her death. Previously, the group had bought things together and left them in her store, and she had never been impatient.

The old lady had agreed with her children that she and her partner would “leave the mountain” after the Mid-Autumn Festival and go live with her children.

The biggest reward is contentment

The 40th birthday that could not be ushered in

Gao Dahui (1972.8.15-2012.7.21)

In 1992, Gao Dahui was a sophomore at Suzhou City Construction Environmental Protection College when he met his sister Sun Aihua. Four years later, the two walked hand in hand into marriage. At that time, family constraints, even the wedding was not organized, “then I think the form is not important, the most important thing is to love for life.” Sun Aihua said.

After graduation, both of them entered the government of Fangshan District, Gao Dahui in August last year when the town of Hanhe deputy mayor, Sun Aihua is working in the District Environmental Protection Bureau.

Gao Dahui’s health is not very good, high blood pressure, Sun Aihua every morning to urge him to take his medicine.

Every day back home, Gao Dahui always say “very tired”, there are many times Sun Aihua back from washing dishes after dinner, have seen Gao Dahui has fallen asleep on the sofa.

The son is 11 years old and will soon be in the sixth grade, because his parents are busy, usually boarding at school. Sun Aihua’s deepest impression of the scene, is the family gathered together for dinner, talking about the day, happy.

Now, the chain is found, but he can no longer wear it.

The upcoming August is a special month for Gao Dahui. Last August, he was promoted to deputy mayor; August 15 this year, he failed to usher in the 40th birthday.

Two encounters with death

Li Jianmin (46 years old)

To the town of Dachengzi as mayor less than two years, Li Jianmin has dealt with death twice.

July 24, 2011, a 100-year rainstorm, Li Jianmin village to check the transfer of the situation, passing a small bridge, almost let the flooding to kill.

On July 21, 2012, another once-in-a-century rainstorm, around 8 p.m., Miyun County rainfall increased, Li Jianmin reported to the county, out of the conference room when suddenly fainted. 11:26 p.m., Li Jianmin died in the county hospital emergency room. The doctor confirmed the cause of death: myocardial infarction, sudden death.

Li Jianmin was born in Miyun at the age of 46, and had worked in the county cotton yarn factory, Fubo Industrial Co. He worked most of his life without directly facing the dangers from nature such as heavy rains, hailstorms and earthquakes. In the last two years of his life, God placed him in the mountains to taste all of these.

The town of Dachengzi, with a population of 17,000, is on the edge of the capital, Beijing, and the car will miss it in a flash, wandering over to the border of Hebei. Miyun County, where it is located, is the lifeline of Beijing, a city with a huge water shortage. Miyun’s two major rivers: the Hongmenchuan River and the Qingshui River flow through the town, with the Qingshui River flowing directly into the Miyun Reservoir. When it rains heavily, the river overflows its banks and washes up on the streets, leaving the homes on the banks untouched.

Last year, the village of Liang Yu was the hardest hit, with water pouring in from a drainage canal at the entrance of the village, and the village quickly turned into a sea. At that time, a large amount of rainwater gathered in the village on the highway, from the drainage pipe directly into the drainage canal, the drainage canal because of the culvert is too small, was blocked by debris to form a “weir”, coupled with the drainage canal terrain higher than the village, the water directly from the high into the village.

Liu Jixiong, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Dachengzi town, said that these problems have been solved this year.

July 21 at 4 p.m., Li Jianmin came to the village to explain the work, the villagers Han Shufeng perceived a little strange: “that day he spoke in a very deep tone, as if particularly uneasy.”

Liu Jixiong recalled: “environmental management, flood control construction, the mayor of Li has never been ambiguous, each time said first to solve the hidden danger, money matters he to find a way.”

After the incident, Tian Ye called his father, his father speechless, and finally spit out three words: “people are gone.”

After pushing the last shovel of soil

Leng Yongcheng (? -(2012. 7.21)

Leng Yongcheng’s village, Xinjie, Zhoukoudian Town, received 400 mm of rainfall. He was thinking of the 100 or so residents still in the east end of the village, and this village committee Qianbu has not been evacuated. He wanted to use a shovel to build a temporary dam to block the water rushing to the east end of the village, to buy time for the masses to move.

At about 8:40 that night, he called, “the water is too big, the dam is just halfway to the base, may have to collapse.” The cadres took turns dialing back, but never got through.

At 9:00 that night, the forklift driver brought back the exact news: Leng Yongcheng commanded the last shovel of soil, ready to climb out of the flood on the heights, the car evacuated, the result was a flood swept away.
