Sitting across from me were the principal of the high school and the political education director, they were big-bellied, more arrogant than the last time, and their words were full of jingoistic habits, “Don’t get ahead of yourself, this time it’s the county’s rules, so don’t pick a fight. If it weren’t for the fact that you used to be a teacher, someone would have tried to get you.”
He slapped the table and gnashed his teeth, eyes malicious, in a trance, I actually had a kind of meeting the parties in the detention center, froze for a while before coming back to his senses, “open shot and dark arrows with you, the principal within this enclosure is if involved in the black, I will definitely let him go to other enclosures squat.” After saying that I looked out the window, Xu Ye teacher is still sobbing with her head down at the root of the wall, looking at the gauze wrapped around her head, I really can’t suppress my inner anger – in May 2019, a parent smashed the bottle on Xu Ye’s head.
Xu Ye was once my student. In my senior year, I went to a rural middle school to teach, and was Xu Ye’s class teacher and math teacher. At that time, Xu Ye’s grades were average, and her family was not well off, with two younger brothers below. That winter, she didn’t even have a coat to change into, and she kept wanting to drop out of school. I bought her a down jacket and told her that she could take a five-year publicly funded teacher training course. On the day I left the village after teaching, Xu Ye kept shouting behind me, “I will be a good teacher.”

Over the years, Xu Ye is one of the few students I have had frequent contact with. Since she came to teach at this rural middle school at the age of 19, she has called me almost every month, either to discuss teaching issues or to talk about her students. Xu Ye cares a lot about these students, “As long as I see them, I am full of energy every day. I’m afraid I’m not good enough, so you have to teach me more.”
The day Xu Ye called me, I was representing a rape case of an underage girl in her county. In the past, every time the phone is connected, you can hear Xu Ye on the other side of the phone smiling and greeting me, but this time, she just shouted a “teacher Cai” and cried. I was terrified, persuaded half a day, it was difficult for her to stop sobbing and said, “I really don’t know what to do this time, recently there are always various things affecting my teaching at school ……”
Due to family influence and personal experience, I have always been concerned about rural schools, and Xu Ye has often mentioned the situation of her school to me in the past two years. Especially when she became a junior classroom teacher, some of the problems were particularly acute.
Like most rural schools, Xu Ye’s school has been facing the problems of weak student base and high teacher mobility, and few children can get into key high schools. Although the local county also has a general high school, but due to the student source and school style problems, a high school with thousands of graduates, not more than 10 people can get into the second, including art students.
In this context, the vocational school began to advertise – “read the general high school is only in the school three years long fat, on the vocational school can learn the technology to get rich.”
Every year, except for a few outstanding students who apply for key high schools, most of them will fill in vocational schools, and all of them are from this county. It is reasonable to say that students and parents are completely free to choose vocational schools, foreign vocational schools can also be reported. But these years, the local vocational schools in order to monopolize the student source, not only joint with the Education Bureau to prevent foreign vocational schools to enrollment, and in the name of the Education Bureau to inform parents: “outside schools are not approved by the Education Bureau, is the province into the black list, if parents take the initiative to let students choose outside vocational schools, into the black factory, the consequences are their own.”
At the same time, the local vocational school will also give a lot of benefits to the school and the graduation teacher – junior class teachers who take students to visit the vocational school, according to the number of students to give 100 yuan a “refreshment fee”; as long as you can successfully persuade students to apply and enroll in the school, the vocational school will be based on the number of students As long as the students can be persuaded to apply and enroll, the vocational school will give the class teacher 1500 to 3000 yuan “introduction fee” per student. As long as the class teacher is willing to cooperate, with a graduation class, it is normal to earn more than 30,000 yuan “introduction fee” – of course, this money is from the Education Bureau to the central school, by the school leaders after layers of exploitation of the figure.
The wool comes from the sheep’s back, and in the end the students pay for it. After enrolling in vocational schools, some rural children found that they could not afford it and had to drop out again and go out to work, so they even missed the opportunity to attend general high school.
Xu Ye remembers very clearly that he came to the school in the first year and found that there were only 40 students in a junior class, and more than 30 of them applied for vocational school, and nearly 20 of them reported to the school. The class teacher not only got more than 40,000 “referral fees”, but also received a certificate of honor from the Education Bureau and received public recognition. But Xu Ye could not accept it from the beginning. She heartily did not want to fall into the school, vocational school “a hill of beans”, Xu Ye class students also want to go to high school, college entrance exams.
Unexpectedly, such teachers and students have become the county’s alternative.

When Xu Ye first started, I visited her once. That day she specially bought beef to entertain me, and her colleagues joked, “Xu Ye usually cooked by herself, a cabbage with a little spicy sauce can eat for three days, today is considered unprecedented.” Xu Ye explained aside: “The salary is not high, and my family is still counting on me to help a little, so I have to save. Only for the future, I will not go to the ravine as a teacher. Just do something than as a teacher income is high.”
That day, she also gave me a colleague’s salary slip to see, “in the school work for 10 years of veteran teachers, a month’s salary deduction east and west, to hand only more than 2,000. As for my salary, I’m embarrassed to say. The Internet is full of negative news about teachers, saying that teachers abuse students, the PTA patronizing what, but no one really understands ……”
Previously, the school’s director of education advised Xu Ye: “We’re on this salary, give money not to take but also be punished, why not go along with it? The money is unspoken, the county and the Education Bureau have a share, what are you afraid of. How can you have a problem with money? That’s what you deserve.”
“Tens of thousands of dollars are certainly attractive to me. Sometimes I think, when the third class teacher so tired, some students anyway, poor grades, even if the high school can not get into college, why not send to vocational school, I also incidentally improve the life.” Xu Ye said he was torn, but ultimately could not get past his heart, “I am not a businessman, I am a teacher. Students’ performance is poor, can not deprive them of the right to free choice, perhaps the next stage on the effort, can not look down on them.”
Later, school leaders repeatedly pressured Xu Ye to promote the prospect of attending vocational school in their classes, but Xu Ye excused himself and privately advised students to be assertive, “Children, other than learning, what the school preaches is not necessarily right. Teachers want to teach you to distinguish between right and wrong, independent thinking, and to choose your own path.”
The closer we got to graduation, the more the vocational school leaders came into the classroom three times and rudely interrupted the teachers’ teaching. It was clearly said that they were following the instructions from the top to guide the students to fill out the volunteer application. Because Xu Ye did not actively promote, they also took an afternoon to hold a lecture.
The content of the propaganda is nothing but: “Reading general high school is purely a waste of time and money.” “Even if you can barely get into college, the salary is not good.” And so on. A leader of the education department said in front of the students: “There are a lot of college students sweeping the streets, now is a strong country of science and technology, technology is not technology. Cultural knowledge has become obsolete, a hundred useless is a scholar ah.”
Xu Ye was really amazed, “there are school leaders and teachers offstage led by applause, do not know also thought it was a pyramid scheme nest.”
Originally, only 2 students in Xu Ye’s class chose to enroll in vocational school. In the next graduating class in the same school, more than half of the students enrolled in vocational schools. No matter how the leaders bully, Xu Ye just won’t cooperate, “are teachers, really disgusting.”

Xu Ye then realized what had happened in her class. After going to the hospital alone and getting stitches, she finally couldn’t help but call me and cry, “Teacher, I don’t blame you for leaving us in the first place ……”

That day, I just arrived at Xu Ye’s school, Xu Ye poured all her grievances to me, “I want to insist, but I can’t find a reason.”
I could only comfort her, “The more so, the more you have to try to change something. Otherwise these country kids really won’t be able to go out. As the saying goes, scripture teachers are easy to meet, but human teachers are hard to meet. Your presence will one day become a bright light for them.”
As a teacher, Xu Ye said he did not want to hold anyone accountable, but only one demand: “I would rather be expelled, so that their students can enroll in the key high school of their choice. The matter of the child’s choice, I have to escort for him.”

About these, the principal’s words are true, I have previously done research and evidence, almost every school in their county received a notice, “can not let go of a student, to firmly maintain the interests related to local vocational schools, our county has the ability to digest them all.”
Seeing my silence, the principal began to incite again, saying that he was also young, had been enthusiastic, determined to innovate education and dedicate himself, but not yet a year was beaten back by reality, “the school is also a place of right and wrong, everything is not by people, it takes courage to go against the current, unless you do not want to do it.”
He also asked me to persuade Xu Ye, to be aware of the times, do not rampage, “about this phenomenon of enrollment, the water is very deep, many years ago we have unspoken, has formed a solid chain of interests, who demolished the stage who is unlucky.”
Then came the vocational school indicators to complete or not, is directly linked to the teacher’s salary – can not complete the task, you can not evaluate the title. Can not evaluate the excellent classroom teacher, can not evaluate the title, you can not increase wages, subsidies are not.

Three years ago, Xu Ye just came to school, there is no separate dormitory, is with other new teachers in the abandoned classroom bunk live. In recent years, the county introduced a “rural teachers into the city examination policy”, once a year, as long as the scores meet the standard, rural teachers will be able to go to the county to teach. Such a policy for rural teachers is also considered “a way out of the sea of misery,” so for most teachers, rural schools are just a springboard – graduates first to the countryside into the coding, and then through the examination into the city, few teachers are willing to really rooted The countryside. Rural schools are not good at keeping people, let alone a group of leaders who are only interested in their own profit.

The irony is that all those wines are and Xu Ye like ordinary teachers to raise money to send.
These years, the teachers to evaluate the title, merit evaluation have to go through the hands of the central school leaders, he also managed the personnel transfer. Every year at the beginning of the school year, there will be a group of new teachers down to be assigned to each school, the leader said loudly, which school to send more gifts, to that school to assign new teachers. Rural schools are short of teachers, teaching tasks, chores, who all want new teachers to come.
“We can only convince ourselves that it’s all about the student dolls.”
In addition to this, the teachers’ biggest headache was the village’s “poverty alleviation program. The first time I dealt with the school as a lawyer was because of the poverty alleviation project, assisting Xu Ye and the school to discuss matters related to compensation for work-related injuries.
As a child from a rural background, I understand the good intentions of the state and I can do my part to help the villagers get out of poverty and become rich. But what makes Xu Ye powerless is that “most of the school is female teachers, while male teachers are basically leaders. One day, Xu Ye was injured on a lady’s motorcycle on the way to help the poor. After a hospital examination, Xu Ye dislocated her right ankle and fractured her left hand, so she asked her leaders to take a few days off to rest at home. There are always good people who are used to making fun of any profession, and I have been called pretentious, “If you don’t like the treatment of teachers, just leave and let me come.”
Talking about the outside world’s concern for rural teachers, Xu Ye told me, “There are entrepreneurs who have come to schools, but they are superficial and cannot find the problem. Talk to us to improve the treatment of teachers, we certainly hands in favor. Wages are not paid by entrepreneurs, so of course it’s nice to talk about it. Saying we are great, giving us high hats, simply being invited to the party, all have little meaning.”
I went to several rural schools in that county, and most of the teachers said that it was never the salary that caused them the most pain, “but the fact that they couldn’t focus on the podium and always had to be caught between hypocritical leaders and deluded parents.”
During those days, I sat in the back of the classroom and listened to the teachers. One music teacher had a sweet voice and played the piano so well that she took it upon herself to bring her own piano and other musical instruments to the school so that the students could understand music. Another teacher was originally studying Chinese, since the school was arranged to teach mathematics, at least three hours a day to arrange self-study, do test papers, they do not understand before they must not delay students on the podium, “teaching is not to have an accident.”
For teachers who love to teach, they should be allowed to focus on the podium.
Times may really be changing for the better, I think of my own childhood, the village elementary school a teacher to teach all subjects, inevitably there are many omissions. A few years ago at the elementary school reunion, we were still discussing the decline of the stroke input method, “No more than five people in the class could type in Pinyin to communicate.” It was because in the past, teachers taught us pinyin, always with one pronunciation a day, all based on their own preferences, and often taught the wrong words.

Eventually, the Department of Education’s disciplinary team investigated and punished some people, and stipulated that the ingredients of the school cafeteria are allocated by the county, and that education needs to be protected by everyone at all times. The leaders asked me what I would suggest, and the ever-so-cautious me didn’t care about anything else this time.
Of course, vocational schools can also achieve great talent, but students have to go in with their own chests and come out proudly, there should be no deception in it. The teachers’ energy should not be consumed by some messy things, the schools should rely on the strength of healthy competition, and the leaders’ ideas should not be rigid.
