After Biden’s second son Hunter said Wednesday he was under investigation for tax problems, U.S. media revealed the following day that Biden’s brother James Biden was involved in a health care business that was under criminal investigation and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had inquired about his role.
The report said the federal department in the Western District of Pennsylvania was investigating the bankrupt health care company Americore Health, trying to find out what role James played. The company’s chief executive, Grant White, filed for bankruptcy last December after it was revealed that he improperly extracted money from debtors for personal gain. In January, two of the company’s hospitals were searched by the FBI, accused of financial mismanagement and operating in a manner inconsistent with the public interest.
James’ relationship with Americore Health is controversial, with reports citing court records from a civil case in Tennessee in which he was described as the head of the company, but denied by his client. In September, it was reported that two medical companies doing business with James accused each other of transferring money from Americore Health in the form of personal loans that remain outstanding, involving at least $500,000 (about HK$3.9 million).
A former top executive of the company said at the time that James used political connections to promise a large investment from the Middle East, but never delivered on the promise, describing “everything as a false lie. A business partner said James invested significantly in the healthcare sector from 2017 to 2018, and even told potential partners that the surname “Biden” could help them open the door to investment, and that Biden himself was interested in their business model.
Sources close to the investigation said the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General is also involved. The Biden transition team has not yet responded, but members of the campaign said in September that Biden never discussed Americore Health with his brother or expressed support for the company’s business; James has not yet responded to the incident. Although there is no indication that Biden is under investigation, but if he takes office next year, the case is still open, will affect his performance in office.
In the meantime, more inside information about Hunter’s investigation has come to light. People familiar with the matter said that in addition to Delaware, the Southern District of New York Securities Fraud Unit also examined Hunter’s financial situation, including whether money transfers from foreign countries were involved in money laundering. In addition, Delaware and Washington prosecutors investigated him early last year for money laundering and ties to foreign countries.
In a social media post Thursday, President Trump asked “why the fake news media, the FBI and the Justice Department didn’t make the Biden case public before the election,” in response to the revelations that Hunter and James were the targets of successive investigations. However, it’s okay, we still won this election”.
Republican Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Texas) on Thursday publicly called on the U.S. Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate allegations related to Biden’s family before his inauguration on Jan. 20 next year. He told Fox News that the information Hunter Biden revealed on Wednesday was “far-reaching. He also said, “The Biden campaign released details of the tax fraud investigation in Wilmington. I think it’s just to show what is probably the least damaging part of the investigation.”
Cotton said, “There are allegations of securities fraud, money laundering related to Hunter Biden’s Chinese businesses, improper hospital transactions with James Biden. These investigations span multiple jurisdictions.” He said, “If Biden becomes president, then all of these prosecutors who are part of the investigation will be fired next month. If ever there was a situation that would create a conflict of interest that would warrant a special prosecutor, it’s now.”
