Former Hong Kong lawmaker arrives in Washington to seek asylum, announces separation from family

The whereabouts of former Hong Kong legislator Leung Chung Hang have been a mystery since he was rumored to have left Hong Kong for the United States last Thursday (3). We contacted Leung and confirmed that he is in Washington, D.C., preparing to seek political asylum. He also announced his separation from his family and his withdrawal from the political party he founded, the New Deal for Youth. Leung said he was being followed by suspicious people in Hong Kong, and felt that after the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, the space to speak out was getting narrower and narrower, so he left for the United States, hoping to promote more measures to sanction the Chinese Communist Party, and to fight for young protesters in Hong Kong to go to the United States.

We interviewed former Hong Kong legislator Leung Chung Hang, who is now in Washington, D.C., preparing to apply for political asylum, and issued a brief statement through this station.

I hereby declare that I will sever all ties with my family and resign from my position in the New Deal for Youth, the political party I founded.

I feel much safer in Washington than I do in Hong Kong,” said Leung, adding that life is safe for now and that he does not have to worry about his safety. He said he has been followed by unknown people during his stay in Hong Kong, and there are often suspicious people under his residence. He said, “National Security Law” under the Hong Kong has no space to speak out, so he had the idea of leaving.

Leung said: also in the “National Security Law” after the environment, I think I have almost lost the ability to speak out in Hong Kong, even if some things at first I have the courage to say, but in the Hong Kong media environment, they may not be able to write. Under these two reasons, I decided it would be better to leave it, if I leave I also hope to do something, in these premises decided it would be better to come to the United States, to Washington, D.C., to see if we can promote some measures, there is an opportunity to reverse the current political situation in Hong Kong is increasingly sinking.

He revealed that in the future, he hopes to promote the United States sanctions against the Chinese Communist Party, as well as for Hong Kong young protesters to fight for the opportunity to go to the United States. Washington “before the sanctions (China and Hong Kong) measures, as well as support for Hong Kong, is the United States bipartisan consensus, I hope that in the end, no matter who is elected president of the United States, the U.S. government can continue to maintain the current policy towards China, and even need to think of more ways to force China to return to the negotiating table.” In addition, he said he would actively consider running for the “shadow parliament” in the preparation of overseas Hong Kong people.

Liang Songheng revealed that he had left Hong Kong on November 29, connecting through Los Angeles, arrived in Washington last Monday (November 30), the whole process is very confidential, even family members do not know, also have psychological preparation beforehand, may not necessarily be able to escape from Hong Kong, but that “if they will arrest me at the airport, then they will arrest me in Hong Kong, just a matter of time, can not worry too much”, and recalled that the process of leaving the country, not too much obstruction.

Leung Sung Hang said: I bought a ticket only 3 or 4 hours before takeoff to ensure that things are as confidential as possible. In the airport to see a lot of very strange people, so obviously he is not a trip out of the attire, is the appearance of Hong Kong people, middle-aged men, wearing headphones, we may imagine what happened. I went to the automatic counter to try to scan the passport, but it refused to let me through, then I had to walk to the manual counter, usually look at a look and let go, but that customs officer stared at me for two or three minutes.

At present, there are three young former legislators who have been authorized by public opinion to leave Hong Kong, including Law Kwun Chung and Hui Chi Fung. For Xu Zhifeng’s exile in the United Kingdom, the family’s bank accounts in Hong Kong were quickly frozen, Leung Chung Hang questioned the legality of the practice, and criticized the move to damage the image of Hong Kong’s international financial center. Asked whether he would be worried about the same problem himself, Leung Chung Hang laughed and said “I personally do not have this need”.

The authorities have shut down my account bank by bank after the election in 2016, so I have been without an account for more than four years.

The reporter asked: then, you are like Lin Zheng like with cash?

Leung said: Yes, that’s right, but I’m not as rich as she is.

The company’s main goal is to provide a platform for the public to learn more about the company’s business.

He will spend Christmas 2020 in the U.S., and may not be able to return home in this life if he embarks on the path of political asylum. Leung replied that he would think in a positive way, “I hope to return to Hong Kong one day, I hope to return to a Hong Kong that belongs to Hong Kong people.” I hope to return to a Hong Kong that belongs to the people of Hong Kong,” said Leung, adding that “going home” is also the goal of his trip.

The High Court rejected his appeal in September this year, and he was sentenced to four weeks in jail, and was released at the end of September this year.
