Chinese reporter for Bloomberg News detained in Beijing for allegedly endangering national security

Bloomberg News reported Friday (11) that Chinese authorities have detained Haze Fan, a reporter with their Beijing bureau, on suspicion of endangering state security.

Haze Fan was seen being escorted out of his apartment by plainclothes officers after he disappeared around 11:30 a.m. local time Monday, the report said.

Bloomberg News has been searching for Haze Fan through the Chinese government and the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., since he disappeared four days ago, the report said. On Thursday, Bloomberg News’ parent company, Bloomberg, received word that Haze Fan had been arrested on suspicion of participating in activities that endangered national security.

Haze Fan, a Chinese citizen, began working at Bloomberg News in 2017 and has worked for several foreign media outlets, the report said. According to regulations, Chinese nationals can only work as news assistants for foreign news organizations and are not allowed to report independently.

The report cited Chinese officials as saying that Haze Fan is being detained at the Beijing State Security Bureau and that her legal rights are being fully protected and her family has been notified.
