The French data regulator, the National Commission on Information and Freedoms (CNIL), said today that it fined two Google businesses and an Amazon subsidiary 100 million euros (NT$3.4 billion) and 35 million euros, respectively, for violating advertising cookie rules.
The CNIL said that the French websites of Google and Amazon deposited advertising cookies on computers without asking for users’ consent and without providing sufficient information.
A cookie is a small piece of text that a website sends to a browser when a user visits a website, allowing the website to store browsing information that can be used to identify the user and remember their previous activities.
The National Commission on Information and Freedoms said that when users visited the French Google website, several advertising cookies were automatically stored on the computer without prior consent being requested from the visitors. A similar thing happened with Amazon France.
The National Commission for Information and Liberty pointed out that such cookies “can only be stored after the user has given his consent”, thus violating the requirement to obtain prior consent.
