Hunter Biden, the second son of 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, revealed himself Wednesday (9) when he was contacted by the Delaware State Attorney’s Office regarding a tax investigation. In addition, Biden’s brother James Biden (James Biden) is also included in the investigation.
U.S. “Politico” magazine (Politico) reported on the 9th, according to sources familiar with the matter, in addition to Delaware, the securities regulator of the Southern District of New York has also reviewed Biden’s financial situation. Early last year, investigators in Delaware and Washington had launched a probe into Hunt’s potential money laundering activities and his ties to foreign countries, the person familiar with the matter said. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The Biden-Harris transition team, which previously denied knowledge of the federal agency’s investigation into Hunter’s business dealings, defended the statement as Hunter issued it.
“President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has battled through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks he has faced in recent months, but it has only served to make him stronger.” So declared the transition team.
According to a person familiar with the matter, the investigation into Hunt is primarily concerned with his financial ties to foreigners and businesses. As is standard practice in tax investigations, the tax division of Washington’s main judicial branch is also involved in the investigation, the person said.
The investigation began in 2018 and centered on Biden’s business in China, according to the report. The investigation was suspended during the election due to Justice Department policy, but has now resumed.
In addition, federal agencies in the Western District of Pennsylvania are also conducting a criminal investigation into Biden’s brother, James. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents have been questioning James about his dealings with Americore Health, a rural hospital operator, according to a second person with direct knowledge of the investigation. The investigation is still ongoing, the source said.
In late January, FBI agents raided an Americore Health hospital in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, and seized a number of boxes.
In 2018, James had an office at the company’s Florida headquarters, as previously reported by Politico. In a civil case in Tennessee, a business card identifying him as a “principal” of Americore was entered into court records.
James’ former business contacts said James called on the name and influence of his powerful brother in his dealings with Americore.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) Office of Inspector General is also involved in the Americore Health investigation, according to people familiar with the matter.
There are no clear indications yet that Biden himself is under investigation.
