Apple self-developed baseband Qualcomm shares then fell 5%

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple’s chip chief Johny Srouji said during a meeting with Apple employees that Apple has begun developing a cellular modem for better signal performance, and said it will replace Qualcomm’s mobile chips in Apple’s future products.

After the news came out, Qualcomm shares then fell 5%. As of press time, Qualcomm shares were trading at $151.02 after hours, down 3.04%, with a current total market capitalization of $176.153 billion.

In addition, some industry chain sources said that Apple will research its own RF chips and antennas, etc., in addition to its own baseband.

Last December, Apple acquired Intel to sell smartphone modem business, the deal allowed Apple to obtain a large number of wireless patents from Intel, including cellular standard protocols, modem architecture and modem research and development.

Industry sources said that next year iPhone 13 and iPad Pro really may use self-researched 5G baseband, which is certainly a big blow to Qualcomm.
