Michigan Congressman Threatens Witness Removed from House Committee

According to the Michigan House Speaker’s Office, state Democratic Rep. Cynthia Johnson has been stripped of her position on the state House Oversight Committee and is currently under investigation for making threats against Trump supporters.

Johnson is the Democratic leader of the Michigan House Oversight Committee. The committee heard witness testimony last week about election fraud and intimidation. Afterwards, Johnson claimed on her Facebook page that someone was threatening her. She told her supporters to “get it done, in order,” and warned President Trump’s supporters to “beware!” and “Be careful where you walk!”

She also said, “We are not playing with you (talking). For the soldiers among you, you know what to do. Get it done, in order, and make them pay.”

Johnson also released another video Wednesday morning (Dec. 9) saying that she meant for the “soldiers” of Jesus Christ to rise up against racism. The congresswoman also said on CNN that she herself had received a voicemail threat that she would be “hung by a noose.”

Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield, a Republican, said in a letter Wednesday, “Johnson has been removed from the committee, we are considering further disciplinary action, and the department is conducting its own investigation.”

Chatfield added, “The threats against Democrats and Republicans alike are unacceptable and un-American.” The Speaker also noted that reports of Democrats making threats against Michigan Gov. Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson are unacceptable.

Johnson was criticized by Trump’s legal team last week when she publicly pressed witness Jessy Jacob for her “real name” at a hearing.

Trump’s attorney Jenna Ellis highlighted a video from the hearing in which Johnson, a Democrat who represents parts of Detroit, is shown asking Jacob about her “real name. In the video, Johnson asks Jacob what her “real name” is. Jacob replies that she changed her last name when she got married. Johnson then asked her about the spelling of her maiden name, saying it was the only one she wanted. She said that was the only question she wanted to ask the witness.

On Dec. 2, Trump’s lawyer, Jenna Ellis, tweeted, “How do you know that what these witnesses say about the Democrats engaging in intimidation is true? Because you are witnessing the Michigan legislative committee publicly intimidate them at the hearing and on national television broadcasts.”

Ellis claims that in his exchange with Jacob, Johnson “attempted to intimidate and publicly ‘manhunt’ witnesses on national television broadcasts simply because he didn’t like their testimony.”

Jacob, a female witness with an Indian accent and wearing a mask, was at the hearing and accused election workers at the TCF Center in Detroit of telling her to backdate her ballot on Election Day. She described this behavior as fraud and corruption.

Also at the Michigan hearing, Johnson interrupted and attempted to argue with another witness until Chatfield dismissed Johnson’s statement.

Rep. Johnson’s office has not yet responded to a request for comment.
