An Indian special forces soldier of Tibetan descent was killed by a landmine explosion near the site of the Sino-Indian border conflict, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing several Indian government officials and family members.
The 53-year-old Indian soldier, Tenzin Nyima, died near the shores of Lake Bangon in the western Himalayas, while a commando was seriously wounded, according to the news agency.
Indian sources say that the local secret army was created in 1962 after the Sino-Indian border war, and little information is publicly available. But it is estimated to have more than 3,500 members, most of whom are Tibetan refugees.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press conference in Beijing that she did not know whether there were Tibetans in exile in the Indian army, but that China firmly opposed any country providing facilities for “Tibetan independence” forces.
