The Straits Forum is scheduled to be held on September 20, and the KMT has planned for a delegation of more than 100 people, led by former Legislative Yuan President Wang Jinping, to attend. In addition, the KMT Chairman Jiang Qichen said that because of the impact of the Xinguan epidemic and the cross-strait situation, and the Land Commission’s warning to Chinese people not to participate in order to avoid breaking the law, the relevant plans are still under discussion.
It is understood that Jiang Qichen personally invited Wang Jinping to represent the KMT to organize a delegation to participate in the Straits Forum, and Wang Jinping, after considering and confirming the relevant arrangements, has also agreed to organize a delegation to land.
However, Taiwan Army Council spokesman Chiu Chui-ching proposed “three prohibitions,” and threatened that the government has completed “national security five laws” and “anti-infiltration law”; the participants can not directly with the mainland China Signing agreements or MOUs; 14-day quarantine after returning to Taiwan, etc. The KMT seems to be hesitant.
In the past, 5,000 to 10,000 people from Taiwan have always gone to Xiamen for the Straits Forum; this year, only 700 to 800 people have participated so far due to the epidemic. If Wang Jinping leads a 100-member delegation, he will be the most visible group in Taiwan.
It is understood that despite the warning from the Land Commission, the KMT is still following the rules and regulations, and will soon finalize the details of its preparations. In addition to the KMT, blue parties such as the New Party and the Non-Partisan Unity Coalition have also received invitations from the other side of the Taiwan Strait this year, as they have in previous years.
As for the supervisors of the KMT’s Central Committee, such as Secretary General Li Ganlong and Deputy Secretary General, the chances of their being invited are not high, as they must be quarantined for 14 days after returning to Taiwan and some of them have university teaching positions.
On the mainland side, in addition to Taiwan Affairs Office Director Liu Jieyi, CPPCC Chairman Wang Yang will also be down south to attend.
Before Taiwan’s presidential election last year, Wang Jinping visited mainland China on an “ancestral worship tour” and met with Liu Jieyi in Xiamen. In the meeting, Wang reiterated that “Taiwan independence is a fake issue” and stressed that the “1992 Consensus” is the solid foundation of cross-strait relations, which can be used to create new opportunities for peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait.
As for the three prohibitions proposed by the Council of the Mainland Affairs Council, firstly, it is forbidden to hold activities related to the Straits Forum in Taiwan; secondly, it is forbidden for personnel from the central government to participate, and local governments are discouraged to participate, and civil society groups are urged not to participate easily. (3) Prohibiting organizations, individuals or groups, or political parties from participating in any form of activities related to the “One Country, Two Systems Taiwan Proposal” or the “Democratic Consultation”. Violations of the “Five Laws of National Security” and the “Anti-Infiltration Law” will be dealt with by the competent authorities in accordance with the law.
