Thank you for giving us our freedom.
An Open Letter of Thanks from a Group of Mainlanders to Hong Kong People
We are a group of educated and raised mainland Chinese, and we have been closely following the developments since March 31, when the Civil Human Rights Front launched the first march against the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance. We deeply admire your bravery and perseverance, and we are saddened by the price you have been forced to pay. At the same time, as mainlanders, we would like to say thank you for everything you have done. Thank you – what you are doing is not only fighting for your freedom, but also fighting for ours.
The Chinese Communist Party has ruled mainland China for exactly 70 years, and over the past 70 years, round after round of political movements have brutally strangled the blood of this nation little by little. Today, with all horses mute and villains in charge, the country is unable to speak the truth, and there is no freedom at all. As mainlanders, we can’t see hope, we can’t even express our grief, anger and pain. However, your appearances have given us hope, allowing us to see that in this dark land, there is at least one place where there is still hope. What’s more, you have shown us the long-lost qualities of blood, bravery and integrity, and civil disobedience, like a towering lion mountain that never bows in the face of tyranny.
Thirty years ago, when Beijing fell into a time of crisis, you gave the strongest support; thirty years later, when you need support, but you get the mainlanders do not understand and cynicism. As mainlanders, we are ashamed of this. However, we want you to know that there is still such a group of mainlanders who support you, they also long for an independent judiciary, social justice, democratic and free society, they also long for the light of modern civilization to shine on every mainlander, they know that Hong Kong people are not only fighting for their freedom, is also fighting for the freedom of mainlanders.
Unfortunately, as mainlanders, we can’t stand with you for freedom, and we don’t even dare to speak our names to support you publicly. Please forgive us for our cowardice, but we want you to know that you are not alone, that there is a group of mainlanders who are right behind you and are trying to shout for you.
Finally, we hope that you will be careful.
A Group of Continentals September 1
