On December 8, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying hosted a regular press conference. A reporter asked a question about the Venezuelan parliamentary elections held on December 6. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the election was “fraudulent” and the results will not reflect the public opinion of the committee. What is China’s comment on this?
The first thing Hua Chunying asked was whether Pompeo was the U.S. Secretary of State or the world’s Secretary of State, and that he really hadn’t put himself in the right position.
China believes that the Venezuelan people’s election of the plenary in accordance with their own constitution and laws is an internal affair of theirs and should not be unreasonably criticized by a third party. In other words, the results of the Venezuelan election should not be decided by Pompeo, but by the Venezuelan people themselves. China adheres to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and we maintain that countries should conduct their relations with each other on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and non-interference. We call on the U.S. side to respect Venezuela’s democratic system and its practices, and to play a constructive role in finding an early political solution to the Venezuelan issue.
