Japan Transfers Electronic Warfare Task Force

In order to strengthen its already lagging electronic warfare capabilities as China and Russia increase their capabilities in electronic warfare, Japan is planning to establish an Army Self-Defense Force electronic warfare unit, which is expected to be established in the spring of 2021 at the Kenjun station in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Japan is planning to set up a land-based Self-Defense Force electronic warfare unit to counter China’s and Russia’s capabilities in electronic warfare, according to a report today on Kouraken.com.

The report said that according to Japan’s Kyodo News, Russia launched an electromagnetic wave attack on the Ukrainian army in 2014, leading to interference in the command orders of Ukrainian troops, thus slowing down the army’s combat capability, and China has also allegedly recently sent electric warplanes around Japan, suspected of collecting radio messages from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military, which have made Japan cautious and fearful, and decided to strengthen the current electronic warfare system, which is relatively significantly behind China and Russia.

Japan’s Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces in addition to the establishment of electronic warfare specialized units to respond to, but also in the 2020 annual budget to invest 15 billion yen, plans to develop long-range electric warfare aircraft, in addition to the deployment of land-based radio jamming facilities that can interfere with the radar equipment of incoming enemy aircraft, plans to invest 3.8 billion yen in research and development.

According to the report, the new electronic warfare unit will work with the Self-Defense Force (SDF) “Surface Mobile Group,” which specializes in amphibious operations and island capture, to protect the SDF’s communications on the front lines while also jamming enemy radar equipment and guiding enemy radio waves; the electronic warfare unit will now deploy a vehicle-mounted Network Electronic Warfare System (NEWS), which is equipped to analyze enemy radio frequencies and emit the same kind of radio waves to render them ineffective.
