The Middle Eastern countries of Israel and the United Arab Emirates reached a historic peace deal on the 13th of March, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump hailed it as an important foreign policy victory.

On August 13, Israel and the UAE announced the establishment of full diplomatic relations, which also represents a moratorium on Israel’s annexation of occupied territories in the West Bank.

A UAE foreign ministry statement said delegations from the two countries will meet in the coming weeks to sign bilateral agreements in the fields of energy, tourism, direct flights, investment, security, communications and technology.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in August that the groundbreaking agreement was a “historic day” for Israel and welcomed the dawn of a “new era” in its relations with the Arab world.

Under the agreement, Trump demanded that Israel suspend its plans to annex the West Bank. Netanyahu noted that the annexation may one day still take place, but that it must be done in cooperation with Washington, and that “my plan remains unchanged, which is to expand our sovereignty in Judea and Samaria, in full coordination with the United States.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, confirmed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on Twitter. He said: “In a phone call with President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, an agreement was reached to prevent further Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories. …… The UAE and Israel also agreed to cooperate and draw up a blueprint for establishing bilateral relations.”

In a statement from the White House, President Trump said, “After 49 years, Israel and the United Arab Emirates will have fully normalized diplomatic relations. Now that the ice has been broken, I expect that more Arab and Muslim countries will follow in the UAE’s footsteps.”
