Xu Jang Run: Geng Xiaonan lost contact on Sept. 9, may have been arrested

Xu Zhangrun, a former Tsinghua University professor who was once detained by authorities for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party, says his artist friend Geng Xiaonan lost contact with her on Wednesday (Sept. 9) and may have been arrested by Chinese authorities.

He said Geng’s friend kept calling both of her cell phones, but there has been no word from her.

Cai Xia, a former professor at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), who was recently expelled from the Party and had her retirement benefits revoked for criticizing Xi Jinping and the CPC, tweeted that Geng and his wife’s company was under investigation and that they had both lost contact with each other.

In a Wednesday morning tweet, she said, “Beijing authorities investigated the couple’s publishing company under the pretext of economic problems, blocked her husband’s and the company’s accounts, and arrested several employees of the company. Ms. Geng Xiaonan and her husband have been disconnected and have fallen prey to the authorities.”

Cai Xia called for great concern and solidarity with Ms. and Mrs. Geng Xiaonan.

Huynh Jang Run also called on everyone to shout for Geng Xiaonan. He said on social media, “For many years, Ms. Xiaoxiao Nan has spoken out for justice and called out for those who suffer political persecution.

Geng Xiaonan was the first to release the news to overseas media after Xu Zhangrun was taken away by police on July 6, 2012, and his appeal attracted widespread attention. Xu Zhangrun was released after a week in custody, but was fired from Tsinghua University.

In addition to appealing for Xu, Geng also appealed for help for Chen Qiushi, a Chinese citizen journalist who went missing while covering the Xin Guan epidemic in Wuhan.
