Reuters: U.S. to sanction more than a dozen China, Hong Kong officials

The U.S. government could announce sanctions as soon as Monday against at least 12 Chinese officials, including senior members of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), members of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and possibly Hong Kong officials, for their alleged involvement in stripping Hong Kong’s pro-democracy legislators of their seats, freezing their assets in the U.S., and facing financial sanctions, Reuters reported, citing news reports. The U.S. State Department and the White House have not responded yet.

The U.S. has earlier sanctioned more than a dozen Chinese and Hong Kong officials, including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, and Luo Huining, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong, over Beijing’s push for national security laws in Hong Kong.
