Chinese Crackdown on Australia Continues to Escalate, Sixth Australian Beef Company Banned

China continues to clamp down on Australian exports, with a sixth Australian beef company banned from exporting to China.

Reuters reports that China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC) said it suspended the processing of import declarations for beef products shipped to China by Australia’s Meramist Pty Ltd on Monday. The reason for the suspension was not mentioned in a statement on the General Administration of Customs website.

Earlier this year, China suspended a number of Australian beef producers from exporting to China, including one for detecting the banned drug chloramphenicol in China and Australia, and four others for violating quarantine requirements, the report said.

The report also said that China-Australia relations have steadily hit a low point this year, with Chinese imports from Australia down 4.9 percent year-on-year in the first 11 months of the year.
