Bahrain Agrees to Normalize Diplomatic Relations with Israel

The Kingdom of Bahrain has agreed to normalize its diplomatic relations with Israel. This is the second Arab country in the Gulf to agree to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel, after the United Arab Emirates.

The Kingdom of Bahrain agreed on Friday (Sept. 11) to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel, Reuters said. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the news on Twitter. He previously spoke with Bahrain’s King Hamad Bin Isa al-Khalifa and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on separate phone calls.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “This is a historic day. He expressed confidence that other Arab countries would follow suit.

In a joint statement, the United States, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Israel said, “The opening of direct dialogue and relations between these two dynamic countries and advanced economies will continue the positive evolution of the Middle East and will enhance the stability, security and prosperity of the region.”

The joint statement added that the White House plans to hold a signing ceremony on Tuesday, hosted by President Trump, for the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to each sign a “historic declaration of peace.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement on the matter, praising “the dawn of a new era of peace. In a statement, he said, “Under President Trump’s leadership, in less than a month, we have had another historic agreement. This time it is an agreement between Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain. As the president signaled early in this administration, he will strengthen American leadership and build a new partnership for peace. He has kept his promise. These two peace agreements open up new possibilities for peace and stability.”
