“Eggshell Refugee” Forced to Evict, Commits Suicide

The financial crisis of “eggshell” apartments, which offer long term rentals, has forced many tenants to move out of their homes, and recently there have been rumors of a college graduate committing suicide as a result.

According to a number of media sources, a recent college graduate in Guangzhou jumped to his death from the 18th floor after his landlord set fire to his apartment in the early morning of December 3.

The tenant signed a rental agreement with Eggshells in September, as well as a “rent loan,” a one-year loan. But the eggshells had financial problems, and the tenant wanted to quit the lease but had no money to return it.

The landlord couldn’t get the rent, and notified the tenant to move out, but the tenant chose to jump to his death. Many netizens expressed their heartache for the suicides, saying that the current situation makes many people feel desperate.

There are dozens of companies in China that have experienced financial chain problems similar to those of Eggshells. But such companies often leave the problem to landlords and tenants, who desperately need to enforce their rights. And most of the tenants are younger than 30 years old.

China’s Supreme Court said Friday that local authorities are now dealing with the eggshell problem in accordance with the law.
