Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who served as a U.S. Supreme Court justice for many years, died Friday (Sept. 18) of complications from cancer. He was 87.
Ginsburg was a staunch liberal and the second woman to serve as a Supreme Court justice. She died at her home in Washington, D.C., surrounded by her family.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement, “Our nation has lost a justice of historic prominence.”
Ginsburg had been a champion for women’s rights, and she became a Supreme Court justice in 1993.
The Supreme Court said in the statement that Ginsburg died of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Just as the U.S. presidential election approaches, Ginsburg’s death raises the possibility that President Trump will appoint a third Supreme Court justice during his term, which would further expand the Supreme Court’s conservative majority.
