Canada’s Foreign Minister: China-Canada FTA talks have been suspended

Canada’s Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne said recently that negotiations on a Canada-China trade agreement, which began four years ago, have been suspended.

In an interview with the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, he said that he no longer sees the conditions for the continuation of the negotiations.

Mr. Shang has repeatedly criticized China’s foreign policy as arbitrary and aggressive, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has come under domestic pressure. Critics point out that Trudeau is too willing to make concessions in order to strengthen the China-Canada trade relationship.

The Canadian government’s top priority is to free Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadian citizens detained by the Chinese, who are due to be released in Canada in 2018. They were detained by the Chinese after Canada arrested Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in 2018 at the request of the United States.

In June, Beijing authorities accused them of espionage. According to some public opinion, relations between China and Canada have deteriorated to their lowest point in decades.
