President Trump says he will nominate a woman to be a Supreme Court justice to replace the recently deceased Justice Ginsburg.
While attending a campaign rally in Fayetteville, N.C., on Saturday, Trump said, “I’m going to make a nomination next week. I think the new candidate will be a woman, because I actually like women a lot more than men.”
As Trump made this statement, his supporters chanted in unison, “Fill the vacancy.”
Earlier in the day, he praised two women who might be chosen to serve as Supreme Court justices. They are both conservatives whom he elevated to the federal appeals court.
Trump now has the opportunity to nominate a third judge to a lifetime Supreme Court seat. He previously mentioned Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago and Barbara Lagoa of the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta as possible nominees for the Supreme Court bench.
Justice Ginsburg died Friday of cancer. She had been a Supreme Court justice for 27 years. Her death gives Trump, who is seeking re-election to the presidency in the Nov. 3 election, a chance to expand the Supreme Court’s conservative ratio on the court to 6-3.
Supreme Court justice nominees must be approved by the Senate. Trump’s Republican Party currently holds a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
