Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on September 20 that Hong Kong friends can come to Taiwan to work or live if they wish, and that if there are any obstacles in the existing code system, they will be examined one by one and look forward to providing the most assistance, especially humanitarian assistance. She said that Taiwan has set up a special office to deal with the situation. In the past few years, Taiwan journalist Chung Sung-hsiung has been detained by the Land Commission for five Hong Kong protesters who were smuggled to the region.
U.S. State Department Under Secretary Keith Krach met with Causeway Bay Bookstore Manager Robert Destro and others during his visit to Taiwan this week. During the meeting, Mr. Lin said that some of the Hong Kong youths who came to Taiwan have difficulties in their lives and are thinking of going to the United States, and he hopes that the U.S. government will help them transfer to the United States. After the meeting, he quoted U.S. officials as saying they were willing to assist, but did not say how they would do so.
During her appearance at the event on Sunday, Tsai was asked by a media source about how the Taiwan authorities would provide assistance to Hong Kong people, according to the Central News Agency. She said she hopes to provide the most assistance to Hong Kong friends, especially humanitarian assistance, and has set up a special office to handle it.
In a Facebook posting on July 12, Chung admitted to helping five Hong Kong protesters who were smuggled to Taiwan by land and sea in late July. He said that the five Hong Kong people are still detained in the hands of the Land Commission, and said that “the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is not as supportive of the Hong Kong protesters as everyone thinks,” calling on Hong Kong people to “find another way.
In response, KMT Chairman Jiang Qichen then criticized to the media that the Tsai government claims to “support Hong Kong”, but after re-election, there is no actual action, and this incident is more proof that “support Hong Kong” is just words. The National Security Law was passed in Hong Kong, and the KMT proposed amending the Hong Kong and Macau Ordinance at the first opportunity, requiring the Tsai government to respond to the law in order to actually help the people of Hong Kong. He called on the Taiwan authorities to give an explanation.
