U.S. Reportedly Sanctions More Than 20 Individuals and Entities in Connection with Iran’s Nuclear Missile Program

In Washington, the U.S. government is said to be announcing sanctions against more than 20 individuals and entities linked to Iran’s nuclear, missile, and conventional weapons programs on September 21.

Reuters quoted an anonymous U.S. official as saying that Iran could have enough fissile material to build a nuclear weapon by the end of the year. It also said that authorities in Tehran had resumed long-range missile cooperation with North Korea, and reported that President Trump would later issue an executive order punishing those who buy or sell conventional weapons to Iran by prohibiting them from dealing with the United States. This is seen as a way to put pressure on other countries to continue UN sanctions against Iran.

Earlier, Iranian President Rouhani held a cabinet meeting on the 20th and made a statement saying that the United States would face a decisive response from Iran if it took any bullying or other actions. In addition, the spokesman of the Iranian Mission to the UN said that the whole world knows that the U.S. actions are part of the election campaign, adding that the U.S. has new propaganda measures almost every week, but these extreme pressures have clearly failed and only serve to isolate the U.S. further.

It is noteworthy that Britain, France and Germany sent a letter to the UN Security Council on 19 November expressing their opposition to any renewed sanctions against Iran and their support for the integrity of the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal.
