Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor company, announced Tuesday that it has received a license from the U.S. government to continue supplying certain products to Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.
Under the U.S. Department of Commerce ban, starting Sept. 15, all semiconductor manufacturers using U.S. technology or equipment are prohibited from supplying products or providing services to Huawei.
So far, companies such as SMIC, which supplies chips to Huawei, have sought permission from the U.S. to supply Huawei, but have yet to receive approval.
The U.S. government is accusing Huawei of handing over user data to the Chinese government for espionage purposes and is marginalizing Huawei globally. Huawei denies this and accuses the U.S. of trying to discredit it.
According to a Reuters report, the U.S.-China relationship is at its lowest point in decades, and the rivalry over 5G telecoms dominance is comparable to the arms race during the Cold War.
