Azerbaijan and Armenia are at war overnight

Azerbaijan and Armenia say their armies are using heavy weapons as fighting continued Monday morning in the Nakhno-Karabakh region. The United Nations and world powers France, the United States, and Russia have called for a ceasefire, but calls for one were drowned out by the sound of gunfire.

According to Reuters today, fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region continues. Both sides have deployed heavy weapons. Tanks, artillery, and military aircraft have been deployed.

According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, the fighting continued overnight, while the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said that Armenian troops shelled the town of Terter.

Earlier, both sides reported casualties and kills.

According to AFP, heavy fighting broke out between the Caucasus Azeri military and ethnic Armenian separatist forces in the disputed region of “Nadnokarabak,” with officials noting that the death toll has risen to 23.

UN Secretary-General Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire.

The Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office said later yesterday that five members of one family were killed when Armenian separatist forces shelled the Azerbaijani village of Gashalty.

Armenian separatist authorities in the Nagorny Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, where Sunday’s heavy fighting broke out, mentioned that 16 of their troops and two civilians were killed and more than 100 wounded. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, earlier claimed that the arch-enemy Azerbaijan had declared war on the Armenian people. The Azerbaijani parliament also passed a nationwide martial law and curfew starting today.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for a ceasefire on both sides. A spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Guterres said in a statement today: “The Secretary-General strongly calls on both sides to immediately cease fire, reduce tensions, and begin meaningful negotiations immediately. The U.S. State Department also condemned the rising violence between Azerbaijan and Armenia and called for an immediate ceasefire between the two sides. Russian President Vladimir Putin also called for an end to hostilities after discussing with Mr. Pashinyan the situation of military conflict in the Nogalabakh region of Monaco.
