Thousands of students at 40 UK universities must self-segregate

The outbreak in the UK is heating up, with 5,693 people diagnosed and 17 sickened on the 27th day of the month, according to the latest figures. 2019 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease have been reported at 40 universities at the start of the semester, with thousands of students having to isolate themselves.

This includes the University of Glasgow in Scotland, where 172 students have been diagnosed and about 600 students are in quarantine due to trouble from orientation activities. Manchester Metropolitan University has 127 confirmed cases and 1,700 in quarantine.

Britain’s opposition Labor Party called on the government to consider stopping the return of students to school. Aberystwyth University in Wales has become another university to announce it is scrapping face-to-face teaching in favor of online classes, the BBC and Central News Agency report.

The Labour Party has called on the government to consider not allowing students to return to school, rather than wait until they are exposed to the risk of infection and then return home to be quarantined, leading to a wider contagion crisis. Kate Green, the shadow education secretary, said that the government should consider delaying the start of the school year, but that there must be “an effective and efficient exam system” as an alternative.

In addition to campuses, the outbreak is spreading rapidly in other parts of the UK. According to the latest figures, 5,693 people were diagnosed on the 27th, and 17 people died of the disease, and the government responded with strict laws. From today, those who refuse home quarantine in England can be fined up to £1,000 for the first time, and up to £10,000 for repeated failures or serious violations.
