U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warns Italy of China’s economic influence and the national security threat it poses to Italy’s mobile networks.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is visiting Italy, said at a joint press conference with Italian Foreign Minister Di Maio in Rome on Wednesday that “the foreign minister and I discussed at length the concerns of the United States about the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to use its economic presence in Italy for its own strategic purposes,” and that “the U.S. The Italian government is also urged to carefully consider the threat posed to Italy’s national security and the privacy of its citizens by technology companies with ties to the Chinese Communist Party.”
Foreign Minister Di Maio said Italy understands the U.S. concerns about Chinese 5G technology and is “fully aware of each country’s responsibility to deal with security issues.”
Di Maio also said Italy hopes the EU will adopt a common position on 5G development.
Luigi De Vecchis, president of Huawei Italy, told a press conference in Rome on Wednesday that the branch is prepared to undergo any checks to show that its technology is safe. He said, “We will be open about our internal, ready to undergo an autopsy and respond to all these political pressures.”
