EU: Two-dose vaccine against Delta mutant strain vital

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said today that it is “critical” that approved vaccine manufacturers administer both doses of the vaccine to provide maximum protection against the highly infectious Delta mutant strain, urging countries to speed up vaccination.

AFP reports that the Delta variant of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), first identified in India, is spreading rapidly in Europe. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) states that the Delta variant will account for 90% of all cases by the end of August this year.

The EU Medicines Agency mentioned, “Preliminary evidence suggests that both doses of the Covid-19 two-dose vaccine are required…to provide adequate protection against the Delta mutant strain.”

According to the EU Medicines Agency, Delta is a “worryingly mutated strain” that is spreading rapidly in Europe and could seriously undermine efforts to control the outbreak.
