21 Macau Legislative Council candidates ruled ineligible to run for election

The new Macau Legislative Assembly election will be held on September 12. On Friday (9), the Legislative Assembly Election Commission announced that six groups of 21 candidates have been ruled ineligible to run for the election. They were accused of “not upholding the Basic Law or not being loyal to the SAR”.

Macau’s “Endless Media” reported that three groups of democrats, including “Democracy for Macau”, “New Macau Progressive Association” and “Advancement of the Society “All of them cannot run in the election.

The “Society Forward” confirmed that it received a notice from the EAC on the same day, and the EAC said that the five candidates were not eligible to be elected because they complied with the provisions of Article 6(8)(2) of the Legislative Council Election Law. The school has applied to the EAC for an urgent resolution and is learning about the relevant administrative and legal procedures. The latest news will be announced if available.

According to Article 6(8)(2) of the Macau Legislative Assembly Election Law, “those who have proved that they do not uphold the Basic Law of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China or are not loyal to the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China” are not eligible to be elected.

At a press conference in the afternoon, the president of the EAC, Mr. Tang Xiaofeng, refused to disclose the list of people who are not eligible to run for the election and the concrete evidence that they are accused of “not upholding the Basic Law or not being loyal to the SAR”, but said that it is “judged according to police information”.

He said he had informed the people concerned that they could respond next week or change their candidacies, file objections or judicial appeals. He stressed that because of the possible judicial process, not to announce which groups and details involved.

Reporters asked the Macau initiative, and whether the situation in Hong Kong; why some of the current legislators can pass the review before, but now can not pass, Tang Xiaofeng did not respond positively, only stressed that the EAC in accordance with the law, each election will examine the eligibility of candidates.
